The
Titans are an extra-dimensional race of beings were once worshipped as
gods by the people of Ancient Greece. Their exact origins are unknown,
but according to ancient myths, they are the children of Ouranus and
Gaea,
ancestors of the Olympian gods. Ouranus was said to be conceived by Gaea, the primeval mother-goddess
spirit who shared her life-force with that of the Earth. Ouranus mated
with Gaea and fathered the Titans, the original gods of Greece, who were
born physically perfect. Ouranus was greatly pleased by his progeny and
mated with Gaea again, and she gave birth to the Cyclopes, three sons
born with only one eye each. Ouranus mated with Gaea again and had three
more monstrous sons, the Hecatocheiroi, who were born with a multitude
of arms. Gaea greatly loved all her children, but Ouranus was greatly
embarrassed by the Cyclops and the Hecatocheiroi and he imprisoned them
away in Tartarus, the most dismal section of the extra dimensional
underworld later known as Hades, so he would not have to look upon them.
(Ouranus and Cronus are not to be confused with the Eternals Uranus and
Cronos, the latter of whom is also known as Kronos.)
Gaea grieved greatly for the Cyclopes
and the Hecatocheiroi and desired to free them from the underworld. She
called upon the Titans for one of them brave enough to overthrow their
father and free their brothers from the underworld, but they all refused
from fear of him and his power. From among them, Cronus promised to
carry out her wishes and took a scythe to slay Ouranus. Cronus overthrew
his father's rule of the gods by fatally wounding him. The dying Ouranus
prophesized that Cronus would likewise be overthrown by one of his own
children. Cronus also slew the Titan Ophion for control of Mount Olympus
to establish his seat of power and took the Titaness Rhea as his wife.
As a result of Ouranus' dying
prophesy, upon the birth of his own children, Cronus had the infant
imprisoned in Tartarus. The offspring he sent there were Hades, Hestia,
Demeter and Hera. (Later legends erroneously claimed that Cronus had
actually swallowed his children and that they remained alive inside him
until released by their brother Zeus.) Instructed by Gaea, Rhea
concealed her sixth pregnancy from Cronus and secretly gave birth to
Zeus on Mount Lycaeum in Arcadia, an area of land now known as Greece.
Rhea gave the infant Zeus to the safekeeping of Gaea, who hid the baby
in the cave of Dicte on Aegean Hill on the isle of Crete, where he was
tended by various minor goddesses.
While Cronus ruled as king of the
gods, he achieved a period of paradise upon earth without war or death
and was eventually worshipped as god of time, having outgrown his
worship as an earth-god. As Zeus matured, he gathered a retinue of
allies from his siblings, the Cyclops and the Hecatocheiroi as well as a
few Titans disenchanted by Cronus. Zeus fought to conquer Olympus in a
ten year war which ended with Zeus's victory. He imprisoned most of the
male Titans in Tartarus and established himself as ruler of the gods,
sharing his dominance of Earth with Poseidon and Hades, who took
dominance over the seas and the underworld, respectively.
Over the years, Theia, one of the
female Titans imprisoned in Tartarus,
managed to free herself and escaped to Earth, living as a mortal and
developing her power over several years. her husband, Hyperion, somehow
sensing she was missing subsequently managed to free himself with the
aide of Wonder Girl of the Teen Titans. The Titans tried to retake
Olympus, but were unsuccessful. Upon realizing how many years had
passed, they developed a truce with Zeus and the Olympian gods. They
established a new home elsewhere in the universe and rallied with the
Olympians when Theia tried to claim Olympus on her behalf. The
Titans retreated to another world in the Earth's dimension which they
called New Chronos. Possibly taking inspiration from the Young Gods
gathered by Gaea,
they began seeking children of pure genetic potential to serve as their
heirs after the Olympians. According to Rhea, they began this
undertaking after Zeus had exiled from Earth, but this may be a symptom
of concurrent alterations in the time stream after the Crisis of
Infinite Earths. The Titans chose children from Earth and nearby
planets, granting them names from the cities of Ancient Greece. Their
intent was to return these children to their home planets with their
memories altered in order that they would serve as exemplars for their
home planets. One of these children was allegedly Donna Troy (Wonder
Girl). When Sparta of Synriannaq regained her memories, she launched a
war against the others and came to Earth to slay Wonder Girl, who united
with the two surviving exemplars and defeated Sparta, placing her in the
custody of Xanthi, another of the exemplars. The
Titans ceased collecting potential heirs after Sparta's madness. They
returned to Earth when Wonder Girl was confronted by Lord Chaos, an
alternate future version of her son who had traveled back in time to
secure his power in the future. To keep him from gaining power, Wonder
Girl asked to be stripped of her godly powers. She eventually became known
as Troia, but when she was murdered by a rogue Superman
robot, Hyperion restored her to life and imbued her with memories that
were not her own from Phoebe, the goddess of the moon. With Troia
believed dead, Hyperion took her from Earth, sending her as his champion
to end war on other planets, but Donna regained her true memories when
the Teen Titans realized she was still alive. Hyperion had discovered a
way to recreate the Crisis and recreate the universe under his guidance,
but Donna instead tried to re-imprison him in Tartarus. Once Hyperion
realized her motives, he clashed with the Teen Titans, leading to the
destruction of New Chronus. The
remaining Titans returned to Tartarus afterward, but Cronus escaped a
few more times. He attempted to overthrow the pantheons of Earth in
order to lay claim to Earth, but was defeated by Wonder Woman and the Hindu
Gods. On his second escape attempt, he clashed with Hercules and the
Hulk and was once again forced back to Tartarus. The
Titans possess the conventional physical attributes of the Olympian
gods. Like all Olympians, they are immortal: they have has not aged
since reaching adulthood and cannot die by any conventional means. They
are immune to all Earthly diseases and are resistant to conventional
injury. If any of then were somehow wounded, their godly life force
would enable them to recover with superhuman speed. It would take an
injury of such magnitude that it dispersed a major portion of their
bodily molecules to cause a physical death. Even then, it might be
possible for a god of significant power, such as Zeus, Poseidon and
Apollo or for a number of Olympian gods of equal power working together
to revive them. The Titans also possess superhuman strength and their
Olympian metabolism provide them with far greater than human endurance
in all physical activities. (Olympian flesh and bone is about three
times as dense as similar human tissue, contributing to the Olympians'
superhuman strength and weight.) Each of the Titans also possess
mystical powers over a particular field or object connected to their
individual personalities or traits. First
