Separating floss can be a nightmare but I think I've mastered it... I use one of DMC floss holders... The gold coloured one's you get in packs of 12...
I put the hank onto it. Then take off one end and remover the papers... Don't panic. Just make sure you've nothing spiky about - like a pin cushion or it to get caught on... (been there done that!)
Find the end but don't split from there, go in about 6 inch & open it up. Rolling it between fingers to untwist I tend to use it in 3 strands soo I split 3/3 & pull it back to the start...
Then allowing the holder to turn & unwind a couple of turn wind onto two separate floss holders... Bit by bit, allowing it to untwist as you go... Winding a bit on one then the other... And remember to WALK the thread rather than wrapping & putting extra twists in the thread...
Tatting with 3 strands is about #40 & the colours available are mind blowing... Hope this helps
