Curse

Purity in the living world became quite a problem. The tenshi-chi soon became desirable in all the wrong ways. Most of them looked like beautiful young women. Only twice a year did a boy come out. Even those were very attractive. It didn’t take long for Heaven to see the potential problem unfolding. Kami called a meeting in January.

“We cannot have our virgins being tainted so early,” he complained.

“But what can we do?” Gabriel asked.

“We could make them ugly,” Mi-chan suggested with a shrug. All eyes fell on her when she said that.

“What?” she asked.

“That never seems to be possible,” Michael complained. “I tried, they always come out looking prefect!” Gabriel raised an eyebrow at his brother.

“You tried to make a chi?” he asked. “Why?”

“I just wanted to try it out,” Michael said.

“Right…”

“It’s true!”

Kami cleared his throat. “Let’s stay on track here. What can we do about this?” His staff thought about a proper solution. Bayu lifted her head when she came up with an idea.

“We could do a virgin curse,” she said. The angels stared at her with big eyes.

“You can’t…” Raphael said.

“It will be different,” she insisted. “We could just make a fresh curse from scratch.”

“How would you do it?” Kami asked. Bayu sat back in her chair.

“Give me five days,” she said.

---------

Bayu locked herself in her room. She combed through all of her old spell books. This curse had to be uniquely her own. With that in mind, she sat back and closed her eyes. She remembered her love for Lucifer for reasons she couldn’t grasp. Their lovemaking lit her bed on fire. Passion like that should only be with someone that you love. Bayu yanked open her eyes.

“That might just work,” she said to herself. With that she got to work.

-------

Bayu started the first part of the curse by taking a piece of her own heart and placing it into a small box. She sent it straight away to Michael. At first he didn’t get it.

“Why are you giving me this?” he asked. The angel smiled at him.

“Just add something to it,” she said.

“Anything?”

“Anything.”

As a result, he contributed thorny stems of roses to the heart piece. Michael passed the box down the line to his brothers. Gabriel contributed wine and Raphael tied it all with a black silk string. More elements such as moss, buttons, angel feathers, and sour notes from a drunken lute player ended up in the growing box. Kami was the last one to add something to the developing curse. His element? He preferred to keep it a secret for the time being. The box returned to Bayu by the third Sunday in April.

“I thank you all,” she said. The angel turned and threw the stuffed box into a great bonfire. Bayu closed her eyes and began to chant.

“May a young woman sleep with the one man she loves and let the rest that she strays with or those who violate her die from poisoning,” she said. “Only after the woman’s love is dead is when she will be free to love another. The smoke bellowed to the sky and vanished.” Bayu opened her eyes and smiled as the power coursed through her body.

“Perfect,” she said. The angel fell back on the ground and drew her eyes closed again. The “virgin curse” as they would later call it took effect and stayed around even to this day. Though it would go through many changes, the basic principle of the curse remained.
