Chapter Four: Doctor and Patient:

-Cassie-

I found myself floating over my body in the hospital bed. Dr. Stonem sat by my side. Instinct screamed at me to fight, but my heart held me back. I still haven’t gotten over my feelings for him. I don’t think I ever will. That is why I have to fight him just to end everything between us. Suddenly, I paused. I noticed him looking up in my direction. Can he even see me? I shook my head to myself. Of course he could, what kind of a question is that? This man couldn’t really feel emotion and there had been rumors in England that he could talk to God and the Devil. I waved my arm at him. That doctor gave me a twisted grin as he patted a space next to him on my bed. I shuddered at his invitation. That smile of his doesn’t help me at all. However, I found myself floating downwards to him. I sat down beside him. He still grinned at me.

“I heard your conversation with Megan,” he said. I tried not to look fazed by him.

“Is that right?” I asked.

“I don’t think you can do it.”

“And why is that?”

“She’s not meant to learn the truth about why she was pulled from her body.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Not meant to learn the truth? What do you mean by that?”

“Just as I say with that. Too much is at stake if she learns about how she died.”

“What’s at stake? Your career?”

“Oh no, no. Not mine. Here, come with me.” He rose to his feet and walked over to the door. I eyed him, curiously. William held out his arm as if to show me out. I dropped my shoulders for a bit. What choice do I have at the moment? I rose to my feet and walked over to him.

We both handed out into the hall. I looked around as I floated behind him. I turned to the doctor’s back.

“Where exactly are we going?” I asked. Dr. Stonem held up his hand to silence me. I drew my mouth closed as we rounded the corner. I really didn’t like where this was going, but yet my own curiosity wouldn’t let up. We came to the head doctor’s office. William peeked inside.

Take a look, he said in my mind. I floated over and peeked through the glass. The chief of surgery sat at his desk on the phone. I turned back to William.

“Why are we at the chief’s office?” I asked. The doctor had a dead look on his face this time.

“He is one of those that have secrets that could be exposed if that child gets back her memories,” he told me. “He’s part of an underground society.”

“Is that right?” I asked.

“He’s not the only one.” He took hold of my shoulder and pulled me away from the door with him. The doctor took me down to the Radiology lab.

“Look here,” he whispered. I did so. The main radiologist and his female coworker shared a kiss on the desk. I tried to look away from where he placed his hand on her thigh. She opened her mouth to accept his tongue inside. I turned to William.

“Are they…” I began to ask. He gave me a stern nod.

“But that’s not his only secret,” he said. I looked at him, intently. He leaned close to my face.

“Let’s just say,” Dr. Stonem said. “He has ruined a life in this very hospital and now the patient’s family wants revenge.” I opened my mouth to speak, but William held up my hand.

“Let’s just leave it at that,” he whispered. I drew my mouth closed. Why does he still have some sort of power of me after all of these years? Right then, I made up my mind. Dr. Stonem looked me in the eye.

“So, what are you going to do?” he asked. I narrowed my eyes at him.

“I’m going to bring her home,” I said. His face didn’t change.

“Is that so?” he asked.

“Yes!” I declared. He only shook his head at me.

“I figured you’d say as much,” he said. “Then, you leave me no choice than to thwart your every attempt.” I glared at him.

“I will be ready for you to do that,” I said. He patted me on the head like a parent to his child.

“I’ll take you back to your room,” the doctor said. I pushed away his hand.

“I can go back myself,” I said. I walked away before he could say another word. The mere sight of his face was just enough to push me to defy him once more.

Moments later, I awoke in my bed.
