Mi-chan’s Angels

Mi-chan faced a small crisis on one hot summer day. She never left the door to her creation unlocked. That day was rather off for her. Mi-chan ended up being too distracted by a long phone call to lock her door. While she was away, the pot for making new unborn souls tilted over. As a result, twelve little unborn souls managed to creep out into the living world. A thirteenth one was about to escape, but Mi-chan happened to walk in at the right moment.

“Where are you trying to go?” she asked. The soul paused as if staring at her. It tried to fly out the door, but Mi-chan caught it just in time.

“No,” she said. “Get back in there.” After about three minutes, Mi-chan managed to shove the soul back into the pot. She breathed out and then realized something else. Oh no… No! Mi-chan straightened up the pot and ran out of her office in a panic.

-Living World-

The rain was a heavy contrast to the sun in Heaven. Mi-chan used little clouds to form an umbrella. She counted down to how long she would have before any noticed. Right, she thought. The plan should be easy. Gather up the souls and get back to Heaven. Mi-chan closed her eyes and listened for the children’s voices. Her heart jumped when she caught one right away.

There you are, she thought. Mi-chan took off flying into the sky. She found the first soul watching children playing in a park. Tha angel smiled and shook her head. Found you! Mi-chan crept up behind the unborn soul as it watched the little children. The soul froze when it heard footsteps rushing towards them. Mi-chan stood inches away.

“Hi, little friend,” she said. “It’s time to come home now.” The soul was quick to fly away. Mi-chan sighed and shook her head.

“I didn’t want to have to do this,” she said to herself. Mi-chan flew after the soul and grabbed it by the shapeless body. “Got ya!” She forced the little soul into the jar. One down, eleven more to go.

Mi-chan spent most of the afternoon hunting down the unborn souls and collecting them. By four o’clock, she was down to one more soul to round up. So far, she couldn’t track it down. Mi-chan narrowed her eyes, frowning.

“Come on, little one,” she said to herself. “Where are you?” Her heart suddenly gave way to a small tremor in her chest. She closed her eyes and focused on the small movements on the ground. Voices began to fill her head. I know you are there, she thought. You can’t hide from me forever. Mi-chan focused harder on the tremor she felt. At last, she drew her eyes open.

“There!” she said, gasping. Mi-chan fell straight down to the ground with her jar of souls in hand. She came up to a house with a typical couple having dinner inside. The last free unborn soul floated outside the window, looking in. Mi-chan shook her head. She flew up behind the shapeless body made of air.

“Come on,” she said in a low voice. “You cannot stay here. We have to go.” The soul wouldn’t budge as it pressed its hands against the glass.

“No!” it said.

“But you cannot stay here.”

“I want to meet my mama and papa!”

“You can’t do that yet.”

The soul turned and looked at her with big eyes. “But why not?”

Mi-chan smiled as she patted the soul on the head. “It is not your time yet. You will get to meet your parents soon.”

“You promise?”

“Yes. We should be getting back now.”

The soul took one look at the happy couple dinner having dinner. A little smile came onto its face. I will get to see you again, Mama, Papa. Mi-chan ushered the last soul into the jar. She leaned back and breathed out.

“That’s done,” she said to herself. Mi-chan looked at her pocket watch. “I made it just in time too.” The angel flew up towards the sky to get back to Heaven.

Two years later, that happy couple in the living world gave birth to a healthy baby boy and named him Shou.
