Pure Mornings:

Coby woke up when the bright sun rays hit his eyelids through the deep green curtains. He mumbled in annoyance as he tried to go back to sleep. When that was no use, he just lied there awake. Why can’t I ever stay asleep on Sunday?, he thought. Oh well.

He paused in thought when he felt a warm body cuddled up close to him. Coby looked down to see his girlfriend of six years, Janis, sound asleep. A certain warmth filled his chest. Now he didn’t mind waking up to this on a Sunday morning. He smiled as he brushed light brown bangs from her forehead. He kissed her on the forehead.

This isn’t so bad, he thought. Coby began to reflect on how he and Janis first met. The time was high school. He had just moved to Alabama then. His parents were getting a divorce and they sent him to live with his uncle. Coby became the awkward kid out. He didn’t know anybody in this new Southern land. His uncle tried to help the kid out.

“Come on, Coby,” he said. “Go out there and make some new friends.” Little good did that do. It was senior year and graduation was coming up fast. Coby wouldn’t be able keep any friends after that. So what would be the point?

That was until he met Janis Gold.

He was on his way to school four days before graduation. Coby was driving on a dirt road when he saw a girl standing by her car looking distressed. The boy looked intrigued as she looked around. He had seen her before in his class. She seemed nice, but he never got the chance to introduce her properly. That was until today.

He pulled to a stop and rolled down his window. “Having trouble?”

The light brown haired girl whipped around to him. She held her small hands to her small, perky chest. “My car broke down and the mechanic said it would be two hours before they could get here.” She bit on her light pink nails nervously. “Oh! I don’t want to be late for school.”

“I might be able to help you out,” Coby said. “Hang on.” Coby turned off his car and leapt out. He pushed open the hood to get a better look.

“Ooo,” he said. “How old is this car?”

“My dad bought this car in ’92,” she said.

“Ah, this should be a quick temporary fix,” Coby said. He went back to his truck and got out some tools. After quick fix to the engine, the senior stood back and breathed out.

“There,” he said. “That should hold until you see a mechanic.” The girl looked on amazed at his work.

“How did you…” she began to ask. Coby gave her a little smile.

“It’s just a little hobby I like to do from time to time,” he said. “My father was the one who got me into cars.”

“Well, thanks, uh…” the senior girl said. The boy gave her kind smile.

“Cory,” he said. “Cory Bridges.” The girl gave him a little smile back.

“I’m Janis Gold,” she said. They shook hands and a bond was formed from there.

“Say, can I follow you to school,” Janis spoke up. “I’m not used to driving along these back roads too well.” Cory gave her a little nod.

“Sure,” he said. “Just drive slowly and don’t stay too close.”

“Okay,” Janis said with a nod. They managed to make it to school without any more incident. They managed to become close despite it being close to graduation in four days.

“I don’t want to lose contact with you?” Coby told her on the eve of graduation.

“It’ll be okay,” Janis said calmly. “Let’s just exchange e-mails and numbers to keep in touch.”

“Okay,” her guy friend said. Since then, they kept in contact. On spring break of their junior year of college, they reunited and fell in love. Since then, the rest is a sweet and cute history.

Back in present day, Janis began to stir awake in the bed that she shared with her boyfriend. Cory waited for her with a little smile on his face. Her power green eyes met with his strong hazel ones.

“Good morning,” he whispered to her. She gave him an odd little look on her face.

“You were watching me sleep?” Janis asked. “What were you thinking?” Coby gave her a light kiss on the forehead as he smiled.

“Just about how beautiful you are in the morning,” he said. Then, he took her into his arms before she could say another word. Janis alone made Sunday mornings worth getting up early for.
