Which Witch is Which?

There are many different types of Witches. This is a short list of various Traditions (a.k.a. Trads) that can be found throughout the world.


Alexandrian: Founded in England in the 1960's by Alex Sanders. The rituals are said to be modified Gardenarian.

British: A mix of Celtic and Gardenarian. This Trad has been too structured with co-ed covens.

Celtic Wicca: Use a Celtic/Druid pantheon mixed with Gardenarian rituals, and heavily stress the elements, nature, and the Ancient Ones. Have a vast knowledge of respect for the healing and magickal properities of plants, stones, flowers, trees, elemental spirits, the little people, gnomes, and faeries.

Caledonii: Formerly called Hecatine. Scottish in origin.

Ceremonial Witchcraft: Rituals contain elements of Egyptian and Quabbalistic magick.

Dianic: Founded by Margaret Murray in 1921. A mixture of various Trads. Prime focus is on the Goddess.

Eclectic Witch: One who does not follow a particular Trad. They study many different magickal systems.

Gardenarian: Founded by Gerald Gardner in England in the 1950's. He felt the Old Religion should not die out.

Hereditary Witch: One who can trace the Craft down through their family tree and who has been taught Wicca by a relative.

Kitchen Witch: One who practices their Craft in the kitchen using ordinary everyday pots and pans.

Pictish Witchcraft: Scottish in origin. Attune themselves to all aspects of nature. It is a solitary form of the Craft.

Pow-Wow: Indigenous to South Central Pennsylvania. Based on 400 year old elite German magick.

Satanic Witch: ONE CANNOT BE A SATANIC WITCH BECAUSE WITCHES DO NOT BELIEVE IN SATAN!!!

Seax-Wica: Founded by Raymond Buckland in 1973, a type that is more embraced by practioners world-wide.

Solitary Witch: One who practices the Craft alone, regardless of Trad.

Strega: Follows the Italian teachings.

Teutonic: Follows the Nordic teachings.
