Establishment of the Profession
How well established is the profession in Philadelphia?
The architecture of Philadelphia has a long history, and has helped establish the city into what we know it as today. Originally designed by William Penn himself and modeled after the design of the city of Paris, it has slowly but surely morphed into its own unique city. It has been around since the city was first built, and it’s rich heritage and history are the city’s background and base for architectural profession today. “The site of Philadelphia's earliest settlements, the historic district of Philadelphia is full of 18th-century influences including Colonial-era homes and cobblestone streets.” These architectural traits and characteristics are still visible in many areas of the city today. “Philadelphia is home to numerous historical landmarks, including The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and Betsy Ross's home,” (http://www.hr.upenn.edu/jobs/philadelphia.asp).
There are also a number of other examples of great architectural accomplishments in and throughout the city. “From over 200 galleries on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to the University of Penn’s own Museum of Archeology and Anthropology, Philadelphia has something to offer everyone. Home to the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pennsylvania Ballet, and the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the arts are always alive in Philadelphia,” (http://www.hr.upenn.edu/jobs/philadelphia.asp). Philadelphia’s heritage and architectural past have let it become an established city for architecture today. Between the old traditional designs of the past, and the new upcoming designs of the future, it is a great place of opportunities for all architects.
