Philadelphia Suits Architects
Why is Philadelphia so well suited to this profession?
“Philadelphia is one of the world's great cities, filled with historic treasures and cutting-edge attractions. Revolutionary ideas are the hallmark of Philadelphia, and that has never been more true than day,” (http://www.drexelmed.edu/ResidenciesandFellowships/LifeinPhiladelphia/tabid/687/Default.aspx). The city has so many things to offer for architects, that it is almost perfect for this type of profession. It also has many educational resources as well. To be specific, it is, “The nation's third-highest concentration of research institutions, more than 80 institutions of higher education. Philadelphia boasts a higher concentration of educational resources than New York or Boston.” (http://www.drexelmed.edu/ResidenciesandFellowships/LifeinPhiladelphia/tabid/687/Default.aspx).
“Being the fifth-largest city in the United States, as well as the second-largest city on the East Coast, Philadelphia is a unique location that combines the excitement of a big city with the hospitality of a small town.” (http://www.hr.upenn.edu/jobs/philadelphia.asp). This introduces a great place to live and work in which ever type of environment you enjoy most. It also offers a wide range of architectural options from small homes to huge skyscrapers. The city itself can be researched as well for new and innovative ideas and inspiration.
One local architect, Joseph Turnowchyk, looks at the city as a great place to present creativity. Joe has been working in and around the city on designs for the past 25 years. In the earlier days he remembers “when no building could be higher than Ben Franklin located at the top of City Hall”. That law has been disregarded today and opens a huge window for architects to take their designers so much further than the traditional old city styles. Joe believes that “Philadelphia is a great place to work” not only because of the area (not having to worry about earthquakes, deadly hurricanes or tornadoes!), but because Philadelphia really is the “city of brotherly love”. He’s found the price of living to be very reasonable compared to any other area and has no problem getting his education, experience and eventually started and is now running his own business all in the Philadelphia region. Joe’s example shows that this really is a great place for architects to work (Turnowchyk).
