Decoration Day

The holiday we now call Memorial Day was first celebrated in the 1860s. It was originally called Decoration Day, and was designed to honor Civil War soldiers who had fallen in battle. By the 1910s, it was known as both Decoration Day and Memorial Day.

After a morning of parades and speeches, everyone went to the local cemetery, where girls in white dresses placed wreathes of flowers on the graves of veterans

New Year's Day

Four-leaf clovers, gold coins, forget-me-nots and pigs were all symbols of good luck. Best wishes for a prosperous new year!

Christmas

In the 1800s, small table-top Christmas trees were more common than large trees. This trend was still popular in the 1910s.
