*If you miss practice for any reason the day before scheduled matches, you will NOT be allowed to play in those matches – NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
3. If you show up late for a bus to go to games or arrive late on your own (parent brings you, you drive yourself, etc) at the playing site, you will sit out according to the following policy: The bus will only wait 10 minutes!
1-5 minutes late = 1 game 11-15 minutes late = 3 games
6-10 minutes late = 2 games 16-20 minutes late = 4 games
Later than 20 minutes = NO playing time that night
*please note: Each player will be allowed one OOPS per season up to 10 minutes. In other words, your first offense will not penalize you as long as you arrive within ten minutes of the scheduled arrival time. Each coach will keep track of their own players OOPS!
4. We have incorporated a three (3) strikes and you’re out policy for all 4 levels of teams. If you have unexcused absences to practices or games, show disrespectful behavior to any SMW staff member, coach, player, fan or official or you show up late to games, tournaments, etc. a combination of 3 times – you are OUT – this means off the team!!! We hope this will not be a problem for anyone, will it?
5. If you will be late to practice because you have a test or other work to make-up after school, please bring a pass from that teacher stating that you were in their classroom. If at all possible, please let your coach know ahead of time.
6. You must wear S.M. West practice attire (West t-shirt, or black, gold, or white solid shirt, andblack spandex or black shorts) to each practice session Monday-Thursday. On Fridays, you will be allowed to wear any appropriate volleyball attire – we’ll call these “FREE FRIDAYS”. The penalty for improper attire M-TH will be to run two 15 in 1’s. One by yourself and one with your team!
7. You CANNOT play on an outside volleyball team during the season. You will be declared ineligible for the season and so will your team. We also discourage you from attending basketball, soccer, softball, etc. lessons or playing on an outside team during the season. You need to be dedicated to the sport you are in season with – VOLLEYBALL!
8. You must attend school the entire day of practices or games or you cannot participate in practices or games. The exception is for doctor, dentist appointments or other excused time away from school (field trips, performances, etc.) Please inform Mr. Shepard, the athletic director, if you will be gone during the day for appointments especially on game days. It must be approved by Mr. Shepard first. You may take a parent note to him the day before or the morning of your appointment. DO NOT wait until after your appointment. He will NOT approve this and you will NOT play or practice that day. Sleeping in late is no excuse for missing school. We will check in the attendance office if we ever have reason to doubt you!
10. If you are placed in In-School Suspension for any reason, you may not attend practice or play in matches that day. The same holds true for Out-of-School Suspension, but OSS will be counted as an unexcused absence from volleyball practice.
11. Tardies to class (These will be checked on a weekly basis) – 1st offense = violator runs for each tardy that week; 2nd offense = violator’s team runs; 3rd offense – entire program runs
12. If you do not make your timed 400’s, you can still make a team. However, you will have to run the 400’s you have not made 2 times a week until the time is met.
13. Other expectations we have of you:
a. To work hard and give your best always
b. To hustle all the time – no loafing
c. To attend practice for the entire practice
d. To schedule work around practice or games – volleyball should be a top priority
e. To encourage and support your teammates – ALWAYS!
f. To remember there is no “I” in team
g. To help shag balls during practice
h. You are a student first, and athlete second – you must have passed 5 classes last semester and currently be passing 5 in order to participate. Eligibility is checked weekly – so keep your grades up!
i. Remember, the SM West volleyball program is a FAMILY – treat each and every member as such:
“Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anyone else expects of you.
Never excuse yourself!”
