Debenham Leisure Centre Suffolk Junior Cup Final 2007
Moye hoping it will be third time lucky
Story from Evening Star, 19 April 2007, Written By Elvin King
TONIGHT will be a special occasion for Stonham Aspal stalwart Martyn Moye.
The 35-year-old will be making his third appearance at Portman Road in 15 years
- and he will be looking to make it third time lucky.
Leading scorer for the Metaltec SIL First Division fifth-placed side - as he has
been for most seasons over the last 15 years - Moye will be lining up against
Cambridgeshire County League side Hundon in the Debenham Leisure Centre Suffolk
Junior Cup final.
Moye was included when Stonham were twice beaten in the Suffolk Senior Cup final
at the home of Ipswich Town.
Stonham lost 5-3 to Woodbridge Town in 1992/93 and 2-1 to Grundisburgh in
1997/98, and a victory tonight will earn Moye just rewards for his loyalty.
Winning a county cup has so far eluded Stonham. The club's reserves were losing
finalists in the Suffolk Junior Cup in 1994/95 (2-1 against Wenhaston) and in
the Suffolk Primary Cup in 1985/86. The Primary Cup defeat was 3-0 against
Hundon, giving Stonham the chance to gain revenge this evening (kick-off 7pm).
Stonham will want to enjoy their night out tonight, and cement this by lifting
the trophy.
But overall it is just as important for them to regain their senior status by
finishing their SIL season on a high.
Stonham are jointly managed by Nigel Stiff and Steve Martin.
Stiff is another Stonham legend, joining the club as a teenager and playing both
junior and senior football for many seasons. He had spells at Haughley and
Stowupland, but returned to manage the first team after Stonham's relegation to
Division One in 2004.
This is Martin's first season with Stonham, having previously managed Stowmarket
Town Reserves. He spiced up the squad by bringing in a number of young players
from Stowmarket.
Hundon lost their first league match of the season on Easter Saturday.
Stonham squad: Dobrucki, Locke, Wooby, Ray, Hart, S Martin, Robinson, Convey, G
Brown, Moye, Matthews, Garnham, McLuckie, Harrison, A Brown, B Martin, Flatman,
Barker.
