Heaven 17 for SIL club Stonham Aspal
Story by ELVIN KING, Evening Star, 10 May 2007

It has been 17 days to savour for Metaltec SIL Stonham Aspal.

Following their convincing 3-0 victory over Hundon in the Debenham Leisure Club Suffolk Junior Cup final at Portman Road they set about the task of trying to regain their senior status.

They had to win their last five games to guarantee promotion back to the Senior Division, and a 4-0 success at Wickham Market on Saturday not only completed their mission but also won them the championship - overtaking Old Newton and BT Trimley on the final afternoon.

Stonham's last five games were against Bramford United (4-1), BT Trimley (3-0), St Johns (3-0), Mendlesham (5-1) and Wickham Market (4-0) - an aggregate of 19-2.

Steven Ray, Sean Martin, Steven Locke and Martin Moye scored Stonham's goals in an afternoon when at various times Newton, BT Trimley and Stonham were all occupying first, second and third places.

Mobiles on the touchline were red hot, and in the end it was Stonham and BT Trimley who prevailed, with Newton losing

3-2 at Bramford United.

Stonham remained unbeaten in their final 11 matches, while Newton United missed out on goal difference after winning only three of their final eight games.

Secretary Eric Cousins said: “Our task now is to end the yo-yo of the past four seasons.

“With a much younger squad - plus Marty Moye - managers Steve Martin and Nigel Stiff will be looking forward to next season with confidence for the challenge of staying up this time.”

Stonham were relegated from the Senior Division in 2004, were winners of Division One in 2005, were immediately relegated again in 2006 - and are now winners of Division One.
