Understanding Tofranil.

Tofranil: uses

Tofranil is used to treat depression. Using this medication may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level and may help restore your interest in daily life. Tofranil pamoate belongs to a class of medications called tricyclic antidepressants. It works by restoring balance of certain natural substances ( neurotransmitters ) in brain.

Tofranil: how to use

Read Medication Guide available from your pharmacist. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if we have any questions.

Take Tofranil by mouth with or without food, usually once daily at bedtime or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your age, medical condition and response to therapy. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may start you at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Teenagers and elderly patients may need to start with other forms of Tofranil ( e. g. , Tofranil hydrochloride ) to start at a dose that is low enough.

Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Do not take more or less medication or take it more frequently than prescribed. Your condition won't improve any faster and your risk of side effects will increase. Use Tofranil regularly in order to get most benefit from it. To help we remember, use it at the same time ( s ) each day.

It's important to continue taking Tofranil even if we feel well. Don't suddenly stop taking Tofranil without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when the drug is abruptly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased.

When Tofranil is used for depression, it may take up to 3 weeks before we experience full benefits.

Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Dry mouth, blurred vision, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, stomach cramps, weight gain/loss, and increased sweating may occur while use Tofranil. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed Tofranil because he or she has judged that the benefit to we is greater than risk of side effects. Many people using Tofranil don't have serious side effects.

Other drugs besides Tofranil pamoate that may affect heart rhythm ( QTc prolongation in EKG ) include amiodarone, dofetilide, erythromycin, procainamide, sotalol, and sparfloxacin, among others. QTc prolongation can infrequently result in serious, rarely fatal irregular heartbeat. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details and for instructions on how we may decrease your risk of this effect.

Also report use of drugs which might increase seizure risk ( decrease seizure threshold ) when combined with Tofranil such as bupropion, isoniazid ( INH ) , theophylline, and tramadol, among others. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if we also take drugs that cause drowsiness such as certain antihistamines ( e. g. , diphenhydramine ) , anti-anxiety drugs ( e. g. , diazepam ) , anti-seizure drugs ( e. g. , levetiracetam ) , drugs for motion sickness ( e. g. , meclizine ) .

Check labels on all your medicines ( e. g. , cough-and-cold products ) because they may contain drowsiness-containing ingredients or decongestants that could increase your heart rate or blood pressure. Ask your pharmacist about safe use of those products.

This document doesn't contain all possible interactions. Therefore, before using Tofranil, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all products we use. Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share list with your doctor and pharmacist.

Tofranil: overdose

If we miss a dose Tofranil, take it as soon as you remember. If it's near time of next dose, skip missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose of Tofranil to catch up.

Tofranil: storage

Store in a tightly closed container at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F ( 20-25 degrees C ) away from light and moisture. Do not store in bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Properly discard Tofranil when it's expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Tofranil: warning

Antidepressant medications are used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. These medications can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other important benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people ( especially children/teenagers ) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts. Therefore, it's very important to talk with doctor about risks and benefits of antidepressant medication ( especially for children/teenagers ) , even if treatment is not for a mental/mood condition.

Tell doctor immediately if we notice worsening depression/other psychiatric conditions, unusual behavior changes ( including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts ) , or other mental/mood changes ( including new/worsening anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, hostile/angry feelings, impulsive actions, severe restlessness, very rapid speech ) . Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when dose is changed.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is so common today that at least one in ten people aged 40 or above has high BP related problems. This is pressure that blood exerts on blood vessel walls. High blood pressure occurs when heart works harder to pump blood. Thickening of blood vessels ( arteriosclerosis ) causes it. This can cause stroke or heart attack. It is therefore very important to keep blood pressure to normal levels.

The normal blood pressure is 120/80 mmHg. There are however variations to his readings throughout the day. If the pressure becomes 130/80 mmHg, it's risky condition. It 140/90 mm Hg is hypertension.

According to Ayurveda, hypertension is caused mainly due to accumulation of toxins in blood and tissues, poor digestion or nutrition, imbalance of nervous system, physical or mental stress due to disruption of natural biological rhythm. Ayurveda follows a natural method of treatment to cure hypertension. It's a gradual process of removing impurities accumulated in body tissues.

The main herbs used by Ayurveda practitioners to reduce blood pressure include sarpagandha ( Rouwolfia serpentine ) , Arjuna ( Terminalia arjuna ) , Punarnava ( Boerhavia diffusa ) , Rose extracts etc. Dhara or medicated oil massage for head is beneficial in pacifying mind and reducing blood pressure.

Certain methods of panchakarma are also beneficial in controlling blood pressure.

Prevent Hypertension Include in your diet food items of high fiber content - fruits, vegetables, pulses, cereal, rice, wheat, etc in unprocessed form are good for your heart and body.

If we doubt hypertension, avoid alcohol and tobacco. There are however instances when very lower levels of alcohol is actually beneficial in bringing down high blood pressure. But it isn't advisable as we can easily take 'another' drink.

Give your body some exercise. Walking for 30 minutes in the morning is enough as a starting up. We can slowly introduce aerobics. We can also start practicing yoga today under a skilled master.
