John Davey released his first CD as a leader, entitled "Sound Bites", in the Fall of 2005. It features ten new compositions by Davey, with pianist Jeremy Wall, guitarist Chuck D'Aloia, percussionist Brian Melick, and vocalist Lorena Guillen. His chamber-jazz string trio FROM THE BRIDGE, featuring classical guitarist Dennis Turechek and violist Amy Merrill, released their debut CD “9 views from the bridge” in the Spring of 2001. The recording features nine compositions of John Davey. Both recordings were funded in part by grants from the New York State Council of the Arts and The State University of New York. The CD's are available through the on-line services of cdbaby.com. He has studied with jazz bassists Gary Peacock, Dave Holland and Mark Helias. He performed for three years with his quartet THE BRIDGE, appearing at The Syracuse JazzFest in 1995 and 1996. He has performed with The Catskill Symphony, jazz pianist Mike Holober, saxophonist Al Galodoro, the late percussionist Collin Walcott, jazz cellist Hank Roberts, bansuri flutist Steve Gorn and world percussionist Brian “Uduboy” Melick. He has produced the concert series TANGO, TROVA, SAMBA & SON, featuring pianist/composer Alejandro Rutty and vocalist Lorena Guillen, both from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Dennis Turechek. The concert features music from Central and South America, as well as original compositions influenced by the area by both Davey and Rutty. He recorded and performed with the New Jersey based jazz trio INTERWEAVE for ten years, featuring pianist Frank Giasullo and drummer Pat Tamminen. They recorded their critically aclaimed album “Expedition” at Rudy Van Gelder’s Englewood Cliffs, NJ studio. He is a member of BMI, and teaches jazz bass at SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, where he also teaches Jazz Combo. The new JOHN DAVEY QUARTET features saxophonist Jason Press, guitarist Dan Muniz, and drummer Kevin Corkery. Both Press and Muniz are currently music majors at SUNY Oneonta. The group performs new arrangements of Davey’s jazz compositions that he has recorded on his two CD’s . Of the new quartet, Davey says ‘This is the most exciting ensemble that I have led in years. The youthful energy and imagination that the players bring to the music is contagious. Although barely out of their teens, they are playing with a high degree ofpassion, professionalism and creativity.” |
