Chapters Canada -
Chapters Inc. was formed following the merger of Coles and SmithBooks, then Canada's two largest bookstore chains. In 1994, Canadian General Capital and Pathfinder Capital purchased SmithBooks from Federal Industries, and later that year acquired Coles from Southam Inc. The strategy was to build a strong base company and use its financial strength to invest in the development of large format book superstores.
In April 1995, the merger of SmithBooks and Coles was finalized, and in November 1995, the new company,
Chapters Inc. opened its first two book superstores and from there grew to become the largest book retailer in Canada, operating bookstores in all provinces, under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks, and World's Biggest Bookstore.

British Gas New Pick! The Polished Hoe Author: Austin Clarke Price: $34.95 Sale Price: $20.97 Savings: 40% I first picked this up because I thought it had the most beautiful dust jacket. I quickly discovered in this case you can judge a book by its cover. This is the story of Ms. Mary Matilda – the beautiful black woman on the front – and her life in a racially steeped Barbados town. A former servant turned Mistress of the Manor, Mary begins her tale with a confession: killing the white plantation owner (the man who has abused her since childhood and is also the father of her son). Ultimately, this is a story of compassion, subjugated pride and the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit. Fiction The Piano Tuner Author: Daniel Mason Price: $36.00 Sale Price: $25.20 Savings: 30% I can hardly believe this is a first novel. Part Heart of Darkness , part A Room With a View , The Piano Tuner is a wonderful tale of the clash between passion and duty, set in exotic 19th century Burma. The writing is magical, the story captivating – it’s a book I couldn’t put down and it may well be the sleeper hit of this Fall’s line-up. The Lovely Bones Author: Alice Sebold Price: $29.95 Sale Price: $20.96 Savings: 30% I am not sure quite why but this year my favourite fiction books have all been by first-time writers. When I first read the synopsis of this book – a young girl is raped and murdered by a serial killer – I said to myself, "This is not for me." Fortunately, I was on an airplane and this book was the only one in my briefcase. This tour de force is like nothing you would imagine. It is compelling, beautifully written and a page-turning mystery. After you read it you will want to recommend it to everyone. Crow Lake Author: Mary Lawson Price: $34.95 Sale Price: $24.46 Savings: 30% I will go out on a limb and say that I believe Crow Lake will be a Giller nominee. This beautifully written, intricately woven novel is an oft-told yet engrossing story about family, that at the same time, makes us question if we are enjoying and building our family relationships as well as we might as adults. The Secret Life of Bees Author: Sue Monk Kidd Price: $21.00 Sale Price: $16.80 Savings: 20% "I just loved The Secret Life of Bees ," says Indigo's CEO Heather Reisman. "It's a story of sisterhood and is written for those of us who prefer happy endings with a sense of realism. I am sure this first-time novelist is going to be one to watch." Atonement Author: Ian McEwan Price: $21.00 Sale Price: $14.70 Savings: 30% This Booker Prize nominee has it all – family, intrigue, romance and some twists and turns which took my breath away. The Secret Book of Grazia dei Rossi Author: Jacqueline Park Price: $21.00 Sale Price: $16.80 Savings: 20% This is the ultimate curl up and read which reminded me most of Gone With The Wind , except it is set in Florence – at the height of the Renaissance. This is a great love story and a wonderful history lesson. What was particularly intriguing to me was discovering that the author created the entire story after discovering old letters in the New York Public Library – true documents of a correspondence between the Contessa of Florence and a passionate, poor young woman. The rest as they say is in the story.... More Heather's Picks Don't Miss Out And the Nominees Are...
