"Godzilla: Monster of Monsters" is the first in a long line of video games based off of Godzilla. It was made way back in 1988, so it was made before "Godzilla vs. Biollante" came out. It had some elements of "Godzilla 1985", but for the most part, it was based on classic Toho movies. The story centers around a war between Earth and Planet X. The massive war engulfs the entire solar system, and on the front of the line is the monsters that they control, particularly Ghidora. The guardians of the Earth, Godzilla and Mothra (Mothra I can understand, but they must have ignored "Godzilla 1985" for Godzilla), take it upon themselves to stop these monsters, and bring peace to the Earth! In this game, you control Godzilla and Mothra on what looks like a game board. You can move one of the two monsters per turn, and the "opponent" will do the same to the rival monsters. Each space you go over makes you battle the forces of Planet X, and if you're near a rival monster, you can battle them! Make it to the enemy base, destroy it, and go on to the next planet! Eight levels of each of the ten planets (Planet X was included), are in this game, only skipping out of Mercury and Venus for some reason. Your goal is to make it to Planet X, defeat Ghidora, and help Earth win the war by destroying everything in site! Now, this one is tough to classify. It looks like a platformer, but you don't jump on platforms. You raise your monster's experience level up, but this is definitely not an RPG. It feels like an arcade game, but it never was an arcade game. You do a lot of fighting, but it's not a fighting game. So, I just classify it as "action". Anyways, this game is the classic, the original, and the funest of the Godzilla video games!

Graphics: ***** They may be obsolete by today's standards, but for an NES (Nintendo Entertainment System, the first successful home gaming system), they are really good! You can clearly see what's going on. All the monsters and levels have a distinctive look. There are a lot of different enemies sent after you! Things are moving around all over the place, and yet it's not overwhelming unless it's supposed to. The animation of the just about everything is very well done! Well, they skipped out on Godzilla's crawling, so if you want you can slide on your butt throughout the whole level. Other then that they didn't forget anything. When I first played this game way back when it just came out, I was amazed at how good the graphics were! I still am today.

Play Control: ***** Godzilla games are usually plagued with bad play control, except for this one! Godzilla and Mothra have a wide range of movement, and executing these moves are easy to do! Rarely do you complain that your monster didn’t do what you wanted him/her to do! You can destroy things with ease! Well, maybe it's not easy, but it's not the play control's fault. The system used for battling monsters is the same as all those war things thrown at you. You don’t have to switch from one form of control to another, you can go right at it! The battles, oddly, are fast paced, brutal, intense, and compared to the rest of the Godzilla games, realistic! Almost better then "Godzilla's Greatest Battles" I say. All it needs is a two-player battle system with the ability to play as all the monsters, and this game would be even better! Not their fault for not putting it in, though.

Game Design: **** The game board is easy to get around, it has a password save feature that works good, the two bar system of power and special weapon energy works well, and everything looks slapped together pretty good. However, this is where it looses some points. All the different levels and different areas look, well, different. However, you basically play the same levels over and over and over again! The list of levels down below is extremely short in comparison to the amount you have to go through. The only thing that changes in the levels is their enemy difficulty and the planet in the background! Yes, the planet your on is off in the distance. Looks more like you're on a moon of the planet. Then again, the Earth level shows a moon, and Planet X looks like a giant death star is orbiting it! For some odd reason, there is no background in the monster fights! You fight in a sea of black. The only thing on the screen is your score bar and the monsters. Looks like they were setting out to make a great game, but decided to skimp out on variety near the end. But they could have added some sort of background to the battles! Why they didn't do that I don't know. You fight a lot of monsters in this game. Most of the later ones, like Ghidora and Mechagodzilla are very recognizable. However, some of the early ones, especially Gezora. When I first played this game, I though most of the monsters where just made up! I know better now, but for someone that doesn't know Toho movies well, this game doesn't look like a part of the whole Godzilla thing! Still, everything else works well in this game. It has only one slight flaw, and it's this category.

Satisfaction: ***** This game is all about the feeling that you get when you play it. It's tough to explain, because it is unique to this game. When you are going along, destroying everything and everyone in your path, it's gets pretty amazing at times. The game is actually quite challenging, but once you are an experience player and you get in "the zone", this game is really easy, and yet very fun. While you are playing this, you are thrown an experience like no other. Whenever you leave the game, you are left satisfied. And if you win, you earned it, and you are satisfied that you did.

Sound: ***** The music in this game rocks! This game has probably the best music of any NES game, Godzilla or not! Each planet has it's own tune, and although it might get on your nerves eventually, but it's take a while. By the time you are sick of it, you are done with the level. Seeing as each level takes about a half an hour to complete, that's pretty good! It adds to the feel, and it rocks! The sound effects are pretty generic, but they do the job, and there are a lot of them. There are some great original bleeps to, like say the one for Mothra. Sound is definitely one of the strong suits of this game!

Replay Value: ***** Even though you play the same levels over and over again, it's tough to get sick of this game. Even thought they look the same, every time you play a stage it's a different experience! The game is quite challenging. You have to have good reflexes to dodge all the junk thrown at you. It takes a bit to figure it out, and that makes you want to come back to perfect your skills! Plus, the game itself takes quite a few hours to complete. Luckily, there are passwords. This also allows you to select a level to play again. When you do beat the game, you won't immediately play it over again, but after a few weeks, you will be itching to return! This game stays with you, and that's a good thing.

Overall: ***** Only one section was a four, so the overall is still a five. This is a great game. It looks really weird to. At first it doesn't seem like a Godzilla game, but it is, and it's the best of the Godzilla video game series! It's also the best Godzilla game to run around destroying everything in site! And where else can you play Mothra? This may be a one-player game, but you can play two players pretty easily. Simply have one-person control Godzilla, and another person control Mothra. Both have to make it to the end, so both will play a lot. Alternating turns is the best way to do it. Unfortunately, there is no two-player battle mode. Still, it's a very good game! If you like Godzilla, and you like classic NES video games, then you should sniff out a copy for yourself! You won't be disappointed. Well, you might. It is quite tough. I have a little player's guide to help you out, but the real thing that is in people's way is skill. Once you get the hang of it, though, it's a really great game!

Strategy:

This Game is quite tough to figure out. Not because you don't know what to do, but because the only way to figure it out is to play it a lot. You need experience to truly figure out how to play it. Still, I can help you get started. I will start with the basic play control, and then go on to level and monster fighting strategy. I will end with basic strategy and codes.

Screens

This is the "game board". This is where you start at. You highlight either Godzilla or Mothra, press A to "select" it, and then move the monster to a space. Godzilla can go two spaces, and Mothra can go four. You play through whatever space you go over. If you are next to an enemy monster, you will get a message asking if you want to fight. Say yes, and you will fight that monster! The enemy monsters also move. They all move two spaces (well, Ghidora doesn't move), and they can battle you without you having a choice! Both "sides" take "turns" doing "moves". Your goal to get to on the board is the radar dish space. After destroying the level that the space is on, you can press the A button to move on to the next level!

This is the main screen you will be playing on. The top section is the stats. The first line tells the monster you are playing, the score, and the RPG-like "level" of your monster. The power bar is the bar that determines the usage of "special moves", and the life bar tells how much energy the monster itself has left. If it goes all the way down, then your monster is dead! When you get a certain amount of points, your "level" will increase, and so will your power and life bars. You can't go farther than "level" 16. The main part is where your monster and the rest of the stage are. You go from left to right, and when the screen stops scrolling, you go to the side to leave the stage. There will, of course, be a bunch of little things trying to stop you along the way. You should destroy them before they destroy you. Rocks and certain enemies will sometimes leave life capsules when destroyed. They refill your life bar a bit. There are also capsules that refill your power bar instead, but those are rare.

This is the battle screen! The monster on the left is your monster. The monster on the right is the enemy monster! Your job is to beat the other monster up! The stuff under your usual status section is the opponent's status. It says the name of the monster, their power bar (even though most monster don't seam to use it, it goes down anyways), and their life bar. Knock out all the life and the monster is dead! After a while, the battle will automatically end, and it will go back to the board screen with whoever's "turn" it is.

Your Monsters!

Godzilla: The Monster of Monsters! Godzilla is probably the monster you would want to use. Actually, he really is better than Mothra. In monster fights, that is. Mothra is better at the levels themselves. Actually, you must take both monsters to the end, so you have to use Godzilla there! Well, you could kill him off, but why would you want to do that? A good strategy would be to take Godzilla to the end first, and then Mothra goes out. Godzilla has a better chance of dying in the levels. If one monster has left before the other monster dies, then it's game over! So, take Godzilla to the end first. Godzilla has three moves. Press the A button, and he does a punch. Good for hitting things that are high up. The B button does a kick, which is good for hitting things that are low. Pressing left makes Godzilla move to the left, right to right, up to jump, and down to crouch. You can "slide around" by pressing down and left or right. While crouching, the punch does the same thing as before but the kick is changed to a tail whip. Pressing down and the B button makes Godzilla slap middle height things from quite far away with his tail. By pressing up, then down, and then B, you can do a jumping tail whip. Pressing SELECT executes Godzilla's special move, which is:

Thermonuclear Breath!

Godzilla will spit out his classic weapon. Well, it is wider than usual, but still very powerful. This move can whip almost everything in a wide area! By jumping up and down while doing it, you can destroy even more! This thing takes enemy monster's health really far down really fast! The downside to the breath is that it takes a lot out of the power meter. You also have to wait for it to recharge before you do another one. In the early levels, it takes out the whole bar and you must wait for the whole thing to fill back up! But, in later levels, you can do 2-3 of them and only wait until it fills about half way. Do this as often as you can! Unlike the life bar, the power bar refills after each level.

Mothra: The biggest bug in the solar system! This is probably the only Godzilla game that you can play as Mothra! Mothra may not be as good as Godzilla, but you have to use her anyways. Actually, she is better at certain monster fights, and she is also better at the basic level stages. You have to also play as Mothra because a good strategy is to keep Godzilla and Mothra's levels about even (with a little more for Godzilla). Godzilla is basically a giant sitting duck in most levels, but Mothra can dodge everything! She can also fly up higher than Godzilla can jump. The wings do not count as a hitable area, so the only thing that can be hit is that little body! However, if Mothra does get hit, she gets knocked back farther than Godzilla. She also gets knocked down to. Pressing the A or B buttons unleashes an energy ball. It goes strait forward for about a half a screen. It doesn't do much damage, but the range is good and you can shoot a lot of these. Pressing the SELECT button make Mothra do her special power, the:

Poison Powder!

This attack sends out little wing things down and a little forward. They hurt a little more than the energy balls. The also take out a chunk of the power bar, but not much. She can send out a bunch of these before she runs out of power! If you do run out, just let it recharge some. This attack is great for attacking things directly below you. It's also great for monster battles, especially when the monster traps you in a corner. Use this whenever you feel like it!

Their Monsters!

Gezora: Now you may be wondering to yourself: what they hey is this thing?! Gezora is a giant cuttlefish from the Toho movie "Yog, Monster from Space". He fought for Yog along with Ganime and Kameba. This "thing" is the easiest opponent in the game. It basically hurts you just a teeny tiny bit when it slaps you with its tentacle! Gezora does have an annoying habit of trapping you in the corner. It doesn't hurt, but it does waste time. Hit it hard, hit it fast, and kick it in the eye! Good for either Godzilla or Mothra.

Mogera: This robot hails from the movie known as "The Mysterians". This guy has a lot of armor, so it takes a long time to defeat him, especially for Mothra. However, it won't do much damage to you either. When you hit it, it shakes a bit as if it short circuited, and doesn’t attack much. When it does attack, it just sends out a lame red beam. Mothra can take it, but Godzilla is better to get it over with quickly.

Varan: The unbelievable Varan makes an appearance in this game! And for some reason, he's purple. He has long arms with a long reach, so getting close is tough. So, for Godzilla you should stick to tail whips. Mothra has an easier time. Simply shoot it in the face, and when it tries to get you in the corner, start with the powder. About as generic as a monster gets fighting wise, but those nifty expressions of pain make him the funniest monster to watch!

Baragon: The surprisingly popular Baragon is, surprisingly, only in this game to. He crawls around for most of the time (he he, they kept the part where he crawls on his knees!), only popping up to shoot his beam. Unfortunately, Mothra can't fly over him. Still, Mothra does have an easier time. Get down low and shoot him, and when he tries to attack by shooting his beam or jumping, dodge. When he gets you in the corner, start powdering! If you fight him with Godzilla, KICK HIM IN THE HEAD!!!

Hedorah: You should know this guy. It's the Smog Monster! He has a long reach, and he sends out a bazillion little smog balls out of your head. Mothra doesn't stand much of a chance. She can go far away and shoot through the wall of smog balls, but if she hits one she will get hurt (why?). Better leave him for Godzilla. Get in, tail whip his arms, and ignore the smog ball stream.

Gigan: The cyborg monster from a movie that you should all know, "Godzilla vs. Gigan"! Ironically, Mothra is best when fighting this guy. If you position yourself where you are shooting his chin (or somewhere like that), then Gigan's laser will just fly right over (or under) you! You can blast away without being hurt! That is, until he kicks the saw up. Run away, powder a bit, and hope he stops it soon! For Godzilla, just hope you can hit him and survive! Stick with punches, and do thermonuclear breath like your life depends on it (and it kind of does)!

Mecha-Godzilla: Another well-known monster that Godzilla fought. Mothra still has an advantage with the blind spot thing, but it's so much funer with Godzilla! You can get into what looks like a boxing match with this guy! He punches a lot, and sometimes shoots a laser. Lots of armor, but Godzilla should be able to handle him (he might get hurt a bit in the process, but he had fun, didn't he?).

Ghidora: The biggest, badest, and toughest monster that Planet X will throw at you! This is almost all that stands in your way of victory. Kill all the other monsters before taking this guy on, you need room and all the energy you can get! It's best to send both monsters at him. Start with Mothra, and while Ghidora shoots you with gravity rays, bites you, and occasionally traps you in the corner (unlike Gezora, it hurts), try to send out as much energy balls and powder that you can! After fighting for a short time, Mothra will be severely injured. You can choose to either fight until Mothra dies, or go back to a stage level to refill your life bar. When Ghidorah is hurt a lot (or Mothra is dead), send Godzilla in to finish him off! Shoot him with the thermonuclear breath whenever possible, and use tail whips in the mean time. This guy is tough, but beatable. He's the main "boss" of the game.

Levels

Every time you pass over or land on a tile, you have to play through a little stage. The stage you get is determined by what the tile has on it. Here is a list of the many tiles and stages you will encounter.

Rock Tiles: These levels are filled with a bunch of mountains and looks like the surface of a basic rock moon. It has a lot of big mounds of dirt that get in your way. Mothra can fly over them, but Godzilla must go through them (tail whips are best). But, they leave behind life capsules. There lots of things attacking you, like radar dishes, jets, lasers, missile launches, and annoying shooty things that pop out of nearby mountain's walls. These levels are fairly easy, but can get tricky.

Volcano Tiles: These are quite tough. There is a lot of volcanoes erupting around you, phoenix firebirds and dragons spitting fire at you, swarms of UFO's and fire stars, and giant columns of lava spitting out of the ground! The firebirds are tough to kill; they are usually in a bad position and they take a lot. Most other things also take a lot to take down. Still, not that tough, and it is one of the cooler looking stages (how ironic)!

Grass Tiles: One of two different types of stages can come from these tiles. Either you get this strange level that looks like a bunch of octopi are in the background, or you get some plant world thing. The octopi stages have a bunch of glob things (and occasionally start things to) shot at you. They don't hurt much, and since the purple ones give live capsules and the orange ones spit out power capsules, you can just blast right through this one! The plant levels are a little tougher. They through odd looking walls of plants, acid spiting tendrils, shrubs with eyes, giant asparagus, and even tanks! Most are easy to destroy, and only the laser shooting asparagus will give you trouble. It takes a lot to destroy them, and you have to get past. When you go on this tile, you get a weird one either way!

Dome Tiles: These stages look something like a destroyed Planet X colony city. Well, there is still life there, and it wants to destroy you! In this stage, hundreds of kamikaze Planet X saucers bombard you like nuts! And then there are the remaining defenses: really big guns! They pop out of a dome building, and while they may look menacing, they are slow loading and can easily be destroyed with powder or a jumping tail whip. These levels are fairly tough, but fun.

Black Holes: These little swirly things contain very different stages then you are used to. The one you usually get in the early levels is nothing but a big thing that looks like a brain (called Mantangos)! They shoot out smaller brain things that shoot at you. Beat up the big thing, and it will stop shooting brain things and start shooting energy ball waves! In later levels, it also shoots out deadly "comets" (see below)! Destroy these mushroom brain things for big points! In later levels, you will usually get a Planet X battle cruiser instead (looks more like the Atragon Sub to me). They just sit there near the ground, and they have lots of weapons on them, including a deadly comet launcher! You can destroy all the weapons but the comet launcher. Hit the ship a bunch of times in the right area (it will flash when you hit it right), and it will go boom!

Factories: Now these are the toughest levels you will encounter. You are standing on what looks like the Death Star, and there are lots of things popping out of the walls shooting at you! Lasers, missiles, bullets, beams, even solid walls! You are covered with heavy fire all the way! Not only that, but there is these little things hiding in the walls that not only go in and out, but shoot really powerful triangle things that if you hit them (even whit Mothra's energy balls), you will go flying backwards! Really tough to get close to and kill. Luckily, they are sometimes attached to a ray shooter. Destroy the triangle shooter, and a chain reaction destroys the ray shooter to! Usually happens near the level's end, and it give you two life capsules! These tiles always appear right next to the ending of the level.

SpacePorts: The stage inside is exactly the same as the factory stages. However, after destroying the stage, you can press A again to go to the next level (or win the game)!

Planets:

Essentially, all the levels in this game all look about the same. The only thing that really changes is the board set up, the monsters that appear, and the difficulty. Still, I might as well give you a quick run down of the many planets you will be visiting!

Earth: This is where Godzilla and Mothra are from, so of course they would start here! Starting here and going outwards does unfortunately skip out Mercury and Venus, but it's still nice to start at the home planet. It's strait forward, easy to get through, and varied. Pretty obvious things to have for the first level. Mostly rock levels, but it also has all the other ones except the dome cities.

Gezora Life: 4.0

Moguera Life: 8.0

Mars: A bit larger level that features a whole lot of volcano levels (makes sense for an angry red planet). It gets tougher here, but it's passable.

Gezora Life: 6.0

Moguera Life: 9.0

Varan Life: 12.0

Jupiter: Even larger and but not any tougher. Made mostly of easy plant levels.

Gezora Life: 7.0

Moguera Life: 10.0

Varan Life: 13.0

Hedorah Life: 15.0

Saturn: The most recognizable outer planets in real life obviously needs a sci-fi look with lots of futuristic dome city stages. It's really large, though

Gezora Life: 8.0

Moguera Life: 11.0

Varan Life: 14.0

Hedorah Life: 16.0

Baragon Life: 14.0

Uranus: Ok, I'm not going into that dumb overused joke. Sorry. Anyways, this is a fun one. It's the smallest level. This dinky little cluster of black holes is great for monster fighting fans! That's all you really do, it's crowded with monsters! Fun, cool, and Gigan's here!

Gezora Life: 9.0

Moguera Life: 12.0

Varan Life: 15.0

Hedorah Life: 17.0

Baragon Life: 15.0

Gigan Life: 17.0

Pluto: No, there isn't a mistake here. At very rare periods of time, Pluto actually comes past Neptune's orbit to temporarily become the 8th planet from the sun! The game was made during one of these times. Pluto is back to being the farthest now, but at the time Neptune was. Anyways, this one is huge! The largest of the levels! This also makes sense because it is the nearest rocky planet to Planet X. You have to go around a big blank spot to go to Mechagodzilla's "island", where Mecha G guards the exit.

Gezora Life: 11.0

Moguera Life: 13.0

Varan Life: 16.0

Hedorah Life: 18.0

Baragon Life: 16.0

Gigan Life: 18.0

Mecha-Godzilla Life: 21.0

Neptune: This one is made out of nothing but factory levels! Also, it's a small level designed to have monsters fight you all the time! Fun, but though. This is the only one to not have new monsters coming up.

Gezora Life: 12.0

Moguera Life: 14.0

Varan Life: 17.0

Hedorah Life: 19.0

Baragon Life: 17.0

Gigan Life: 19.0

Mecha-Godzilla Life: 22.0

Planet X: Looks more like the Death Star, and I thought Planet X was right behind Jupiter, but who cares?! In this level, you must pass the gauntlet! It's a long skinny level where you have no choice but to fight every monster on the board! The new and final monster here is Ghidora. He doesn't move from on top of the ending tile, so you have to beat this "boss" in order to occupy the base and win the game! This is your final challenge! Do you have what it takes? Find out!

Gezora Life: 13.0

Moguera Life: 15.0

Varan Life: 18.0

Hedorah Life: 20.0

Baragon Life: 18.0

Gigan Life: 20.0

Mecha-Godzilla Life: 23.0

Ghidora Life: 23.0

Comets!

Comets. Firebirds. Fire Saucers. Fiery Death. Giant Flying Flaming Horseshoes of Doom! Whatever you call them, they are the deadliest enemy you can encounter! They come at random in basic stages, with increasing regularity, or are shot out of a special weapon! It homes in on you, following your every move, and when it hits it blazes through you, taking a huge and often deadly chunk out of your life! When you see one of these coming, start screaming! Unless you know what to do. The trick is to trick it. You have to go up high, so that it follows you there, and then duck under it so it can harmlessly pass over you. Sounds easy? It isn't. Well, for Mothra it's fairly easy. All she has to do is fly high, and when it gets almost to her, fly under it. If you time it right the comet will actually fly off the top of the screen, never to be seen again! Usually though, it just goes out the screen from behind you. Godzilla has a tougher time. He can't fly, so he has to jump. Timing is crucial. If you are at the back of the screen, you should jump up when it's about half way to you. Then, drop down, duck, and slide under it! These plans are easy to do if there is nothing in your way, but there usually is something there! You can be swarmed with enemies at the same time! They can prevent you from going forward, or worse yet, blast you backwards into it! If things are shooting at you, Mothra should dodge the best she can, and if you have power, Godzilla should use his thermonuclear breath. These things may be tough, but once you get the hang of it it's mealy a nuisance that could kill you if you get clumsy. Avoid at all costs.

Miscellaneous Tips:

If you want a challenging game, this might be one. Basically, if you find this game to be very hard, then you will probably hate this game. But, if you find it easy, then it's a very fun game! I have given you all the advice I could in order to make it so you won't have that tough of a time with it. However, what really determines the amount of challenge that you will get is personally ability and practice. You can change the value of one, and so like most things, practice makes perfect (or at least near perfect)! Just hang in there, and try to get the hang of it. It's a more complicated game then you realize. Personally, I found it easy, and I beat it really easily. Then again, I have played the game a lot (and maybe too much). It's a fun game as it is, but if you want to make it funer, try these:

CODES

All codes are entered into the password screen. There is no "O"s or "I"s, because they didn't want you to mistake them for "1"s and "0"s. So, simply put in "0" for "O" and "1" for "I". I put the passwords out to what they should be entered as.

M0NSTER 0: Takes you to a special earth stage where you will fight Ghidorah! One problem though:

Godzilla Starting Level: 1

Mothra Starting Level: 1

Ghidora Starting Life: 23.0

DESTR0Y ALL M0NSTERS: Fight all the monsters! Starts you on earth. Still has a problem with difficulty, but not as bad:

Godzilla Starting Level: 8

Mothra Starting Level: 8

Gezora Life: 13.0

Moguera Life: 15.0

Varan Life: 18.0

Hedorah Life: 20.0

Baragon Life: 18.0

Gigan Life: 20.0

Mecha-Godzilla Life: 23.0

Ghidora Life: 23.0
