Going with the tradition of sequels for the Super Nintendo, the SNES successor of "Godzilla" and "Godzilla 2" for the NES has the distinctive title of "Super Godzilla". It has the highest accessibility of the classic 2-D Godzilla games, mainly due to better distribution and a more recent system. The game itself revolves around a plot about a bunch of humans controlling Godzilla via remote control. They send him into battle against (what else?) space aliens trying to take over Japan! You control Godzilla through simple city areas via an overhead map and a "look what Godzilla's doing" viewpoint. He knocks down buildings if your ram him into one (which is a bad thing when you are the good guys), and crush a bunch of annoying tanks and stuff (why the aliens have tanks I really don't know). At the end of every level, you fight an enemy monster in some sort of side-view battle mode. Using a very screwy system, you beat up the other monster to win the level, 6 in all. In the last two levels, you can turn Godzilla into the cool-looking Super Godzilla! No, he doesn't have a cape and fights crime, but he does beat up monsters real good. The final boss is the even cooler-looking Bagan, who is unique to this game. Although the game has great graphics and battle sequences, it is very simplistic. Even so, it has influenced the movies a lot. Spacegodzilla looks a lot like Super Godzilla, and the same movie had a subplot with controlling Godzilla via remote. Toho almost did a movie on Bagan, but instead dropped the idea and just used the appearance influences to make Destoroyah. As a whole, it's a fun simple game that is over to quick. It has some great graphics and ideas, but a lot of bad parts to. Still, it's a nice little game for the SNES.
Graphics:
***** Really cool looking. That's about it, but it sure is enough. The map view is extremely simplistic, but the monster design and building design and background design are all very well done. During battles, Godzilla and the others have some really cool-looking sequences for their attacks. The graphics are probably this game's strongest asset. It's the only part they didn't screw up on.
Play Control:
*** The map mode is very simplistic, and they controls are simplistic to. However, the game occasionally ignores what direction you are pressing, usually causing Godzilla and run into a building. The battle mode features a truly screwy way of fighting something. It's not true to form, and is annoying to play with. However, despite being screwy, you generally can do what you want to do once you figure it out.
Game Design: ****
The levels are set up pretty well. They are simplistic, but have enough for you to do to keep it from being a useless feature. Although the map looks simple, the view of Godzilla is well designed, giving you something to look at. It usually shows what Godzilla is doing at the moment and where he is, which usually is an accurate depiction. The use of attack sequences is a good idea, giving a lot better look at attacks then it would if they just did it normally. In order to attack in the first place, it's a little screwy though. The game has only 6 levels, and could have used more. Still, there are no save features at all, meaning that sometimes 6 is too much. The game also spends way too much time showing those piddely humans yaking about useless junk. The plot, as good as it is, was never fully fleshed out. Still, the main design is not all that bad, and it still is easy to play and yet not too easy. Plus, Bagan sure is a cool monster.
Satisfaction: ****
It's a fun little game. Short and simple, yet gives you a time to look at cool SNES graphics. It gets frustrating at times, but for the most part you can go and do what you want to do, and yet feel as if you accomplished something. Once you get going and figure it out, you generally beat and leave the game with a feeling that you had a fun time.
Sound: ****
The music is classic Godzilla, although it does seem a bit quirky at times. It has some new music in it, which sometimes is great and sometimes sucks. The sound effects are good, giving you a feeling you really are stomping things. However, the best sound part is the monsters' roars, which are truly great.
Replay Value: ***
After you beat the game, there is not much a reason to go back and play it again. There are only two that I know of: to get a higher high score, and to use both methods to become Super Godzilla. It's a quick little game, meaning that you get done soon and have little reason to play some more. However, it is nice to every once in a while sit down and play the thing for a couple hours of Godzilla fun. Not too often, though.
Overall: ****
It's a fun little game with cool graphics and a few quirks. That's about it. It doesn't have enough good points to get a perfect 5 nor does it have enough bad points to push it to a 3. It is a short game that has some great ideas thrown in it, and if you treat it as a quick experience, then it is a good game. After all, it influenced the movies themselves, so that is saying something. Still, I wouldn't pay too much for it, though. Thankfully, most old used games are only like five bucks.
Strategy:
Basically, the game is very simple, but sometimes deceptively so. Thing is, the controls are not, and the controls are what makes the game somewhat challenging. You are pretty much at the mercy of the game, and if it weren't for the fact that the game is easy, nobody would win. Sometimes you can play the game, try to beat a certain monster, and have the monster always beat you up. You can try a few times to get past the monster, but always fail. Then, you try one more time, and suddenly the game goes from very hard to very easy, without you knowing why. The game somehow "clicks" after a while, and you understand it all subconsciously, even though you don't know what you were doing wrong before. Once the game "clicks" for you, it is a very easy experience. Still, I will give you some tips to help out for the levels, along with just how you control the darn thing in the first place!
The Controls:
Step 1: The Intro
The level starts off by showing you a map of Japan, showing you were you are and where you are going, and telling you why. You have to muddle through the yaking of the people, and they rarely say anything useful anyways. It's all part of the plot, but who cares about the human side anyways! You only can use two buttons: the start button to pause (as if you had a reason to), and the A button to skip to the next message (put it on rapid-fire if you wish). Down below is the cast of the story. They have no names, but my nicknames for them are (from left to right): Kenny, Inchiro, Miki, Professor Bob, and Al the alien.
Step 2: The Area Walk
You now have to get to the enemy monster. It won't be too easy, though. You are either in some sort of city, or some sort of wilderness area. Every level has a lot of little things to meet on the way, and sometimes you have an objective along the way. To control Godzilla, look at the map on the lower half of the screen. The little blue dot represents Godzilla. Move him using the D-Pad. The L and R buttons bring up a screen that not only stops Godzilla and the clock, but shows what area you are in (example: 3-B). The energy number is the amount of hit points you have. Loose them all, and it’s Game Over. The time number always ticks down, and if it goes all the way down it’s also Game Over. The enemy number tells how far you are away from the monster you are looking for. The fuzzy blue tiles are water, which slow you down. The darker blue tiles are deeper water, which slows you down more. The little boxy things are buildings. You loose points for running into them, which subsequently destroys them. You also loose points by running into hills. Godzilla cannot go through bigger buildings and mountains, because they would loose control of him or something screwy like that. There are also enemy forces. Land mines (the square brown things) hurt only if you step on them. Tanks can shoot you from one tile away, forward and diagonal. Missile trucks can shoot you from two tiles away. Red squares are objective points, red circles are mother ship UFOs, and blue lines are power lines. The blue tiles with the circle in it are healing points. They give you nuclear energy, which gives you about 75 hit points back. The yellow tiles are items. Here is a list of the items you can get.
The following items are kept for battle mode. You can only hold four at a time.
Step 3: Battle Mode
The final part of the level is to beat up another monster! The fight system is very screwy, so listen up! The bottom part shows monster pictures and how many hit points they have. If they get to 000, they loose! Above that is the fighting spirit bars. The higher the fighting spirit, the more powerful attacks you can do. Godzilla's bar is the top one; the enemy's is the bottom one. To raise Godzilla's fighting spirit, simply move to the right. Apparently Godzilla likes to go forward. Moving left lowers it, but not as much, so moving back and forth also raises it. To block, press down. It's fairly pointless, doesn't do much of anything, and really lowers your fighting spirit, so, don't do it if you are going to battle! The enemy's spirit seems to move at random, but if it ever spikes, then the monster is going to attack. To stop the monster from attacking, and to have you attack instead, simply punch the other monster with A (or B, or X, or Y). However, you have to get in close, which is not easy considering that the other monster always slams into you. The best method to win is to simply keep charging forward, and somehow punch the other guy. The trick is to get in close enough and punch at just the right moment, and it is rarely easy. However, once you finally do punch the thing, move backwards. The middle screen on the bottom will show an attack (your window of opportunity). The farther you move back, and the more spirit you have, the more powerful that attack will be. Press A again to unleash the attack via a cool looking sequence. Your opponent will attack you pretty much whenever it feels like it, with whatever attack it feels like, so the trick is to get more attacks in then the other monster does, meaning that you just have to attack a lot. You should use your most powerful attacks as often as you can, which means raising your spirit as high as you can before you are clobbered. You can turn the tide of the battle with items. To use an item, press select, select the item you want with the D-Pad, and press start to use it. One "item" you will always have is to retreat. It takes you out of the battle and back to the stage itself. You can go back and heal, collect more items, and come back for more battle. Your opponent will have the same amount of hit points as you left it. Once the monster finally looses all the hit points, you win the level! The whole system is a little screwy, but once it somehow "clicks" for you, it should be quite easy. Like the rest of the game, the fights are more of an experience then a challenge of your skills, but skill still is involved.
Step 4: The End
If you loose all your energy or run out of time, it’s game over for you! You do have continues, and they put you back in the level. The monster you were fighting (if you fought it to begin with), will have 100 more hit points, but you will be at full health! You get more continues by getting high scores. You get points at the end of a level for the amount of hit points you have, the time on the clock, and a negative 10 points for every building or hill you destroyed. You will get fewer points if you used continues. My high score at the end of beating the game was 54,210 points. Can you beat that? Probably, I didn't try so hard.
The Monster:
Godzilla:
HP: 600 (700 after level three)
Height: 100 meters
Weight: 60,000 metric tons
Moves:
Punch - does a tiny amount of damage, necessary to set up other attacks, press A to punch other monster, then back up and do one of these:
Tails Whip - does a little bit of damage
Body Slam - does some more damage
Thermonuclear Breath - does a lot of damage
Extra Powerful Thermonuclear Breath - does a tremendous amount of damage!
Super Godzilla:
HP: 900
Height: 100 meters
Weight: 60,000 metric tons
Moves:
Super Punch - Press and hold A to charge up the punch. Your fighting spirit will increase while you hold. Let go of A to fly forward across the screen. The longer you held, the farther you go forward, and the more powerful the punch. Then, after hitting the other monster, back up and do one of these:
Super Tail Whip - does a good amount of damage
Super Body Slam - does a ton of damage
Super Thermonuclear Breath - does a huge amount of damage
The Ultra-Powerful Navel Beam - Super G's ultimate weapon!
The Levels:
Stage 1: Osaka
Your first level is very simple. It's basically designed to get you used to the controls. Basically just wander around and get the feel the game for a while, and then head for Ghidorah. He is a purple dot, and is usually hanging out by Osaka Castle in 2-B, or by the Tsutenkaru Tower in 1-B. Find him, beat him, and win the level.
King Ghidorah
HP: 600
Height: 150 meters
Weight: 70,000 metric tons
Recommended item: the green ones
Difficulty: Easy
Moves:
One gravity ray - hurts
Two gravity rays - hurts more than one
Three gravity rays - hurts more than two
Ghidorah is not very hard at all. Like the level, he is designed for you to get the hang of the controls. Simply charge forward, punch, move back, and pick an attack, any attack. It's one of the few monsters where it is safe to move back farther to pick the powerful attacks. King Ghidorah is not hard at all, but what did you expect from the first one?
Stage 2: Mt. Fuji
This is also a simple level. However, you start to have the annoying things known as UFOs appear. These guys will bug you for the rest of the game. Every once in a while, one will appear, and you will go into battle mode. They are easy to defeat, though. Simply run up to it, punch it, walk back, and use thermonuclear breath. One shot is all it takes to get rid of the 50 hit points. If they do attack you, it's with a laser, and not only does it not hurt much, but you can punch it while it's charging. To stop the UFOs (and to stop the enemy monster from warping), go right to 1-B through the minefield, up the middle of 1-B into 2-B, and go to that red bulls-eye. You will then fight the mother UFO. It has 150 hit points, so it will take a few shots of thermonuclear breath. However, it is not punched so easily. You have to stand back and let it come down, or bonk into it to make it come up to a good level. You can't go under it because it will blast electricity down at you. If it is low on HP, just keep bashing into it until it falls. Once you have destroyed the mother UFO, go into 2-A and find that purple dot, but heal and collect items first. You will meet with what appears to be you!
Punch it once. This is not an easy feet, because it keeps slamming into you! Once you finally hit it, all 150 hit points will go away, and it’s true form will be revealed: Mechagodzilla (well duh)!
Mechagodzilla
HP: 550
Height: 120 meters
Weight: 150,000 metric tons
Recommended item: the blue ones
Difficulty: Hard
Moves:
Finger Missiles - hurts a bit
Eye Lasers - hurts a bit more
Shield to Nuclear Missile (countermove) - hurts like crazy
Unless you choose not to be Super Godzilla later on, and play as normal Godzilla for the last two monsters, then this guy here is the toughest monster in the game! He is nearly impossible to punch, as he keeps warp-slamming into you! The best way to do it is to just keep charging forward, and punch as soon as you can. You will get smacked around, but eventually you'll get through. Attack as soon as you can, because some times he attacks after you punch him! Sometimes he can be extremely hard, and other times he seems very easy. It's all variable. But whatever you do, do not use regular thermonuclear breath! He will block it with his shield, and shoot out a missile that hurts a heck of a lot! Sometimes its best to just keep tail whipping, no matter how long it takes. It's also good to be ready to retreat if need be. Mechagodzilla is a defining moment. If you can beat him, then you can beat the rest of the game.
Stage 3: Lake Ashino
The professor has been kidnapped! Oh no! To save the guy, you have to locate him in one of many locations; each one marked by a red square. The ones that don't have him in it are loaded with dynamite, so it's best to know where to go. Go forward and then up along the edge of the lake, until you come to a yellow item panel on the shore of 2-B. It will give you a picture of what the area around the professor looks like. It's not to scale, but it's a big help still. After looking at the picture, go to the yellow item panel right below you in the water. It will warp you to a place that has both super energy refills and the mother UFO. If your lucky, the professor is right there to, but if your not, he's in the opposite corner, surrounded by power lines. If you touch the lines, they zap you, not letting you through. However, you can destroy the towers (gray squares) to destroy the lines. Once you finally plow your way through and save the professor, Biollante will appear in the lake at 3-A.
Biollante
HP: 700
Height: 120 meters
Weight: 200,000 metric tons
Recommended Item: the gold ones
Difficulty: Medium
Moves:
Vine Whip (until you destroy the vines) - hurts a tad
Acid Barf - major owie
Roar to Body Bash (countermove) - it hurts also
First thing on the agenda is to punch the vines to death. It allows you to get up to Biollante herself, but the problem is the only move she can do now really really hurts! When she coughs up a bunch of acid sap (which luckily aint too often), it does about 150 pts of damage! She has a ton of hit points, tail whips do piddely damage, and body slams let her body slam you! Luckily, thermonuclear breath works well and she is easy to punch. Just keep punching and shooting your breath, but be careful not to let her corner you, or you'll have to tail whip her to death, which will take a long time. If she goes underwater, just keep moving back and forth to raise your spirit, and be ready to punch her as soon as she comes back up. If you get low one\ hit points (which won't take long), use the healing items. If you run out of items, simply retreat from battle and go over to the left side of 3-A to get some more. The level gives you a lot of stuff, so this rough battle isn't all that hard. Once you finish the level, the professor will insert some King Ghidorah cells in you, raising your HP from 600 to 700 (which would have been helpful BEFORE the fight)! However, it does make your skin a little purple in some scenes.
Stage 4: Yokohama
Your looking for Battra in this one; he is at 4-B. To get there, first go up from where you start, and go to the left until you get to 1-B. Do not collect any yellow items on the way, but go ahead with the ones in 1-B. Destroy the mother UFO, and then go up to Battra. On the way to Battra from the start, try to memorize the layout. You'll need to know the place well for later. Once you reach Battra's island, collect the two yellow items around him (one in 4-B, other in 3-B), and then walk over to Battra to battle him.
Battra
HP: 550
Height: 73 meters
Wingspan: 180 meters
Weight: 30,000 metric tons
Recommended Item: the red ones
Difficulty: Easy/Medium
Moves:
Dive-bomb Slam - it like hurts
Prism Beams - they like hurt more
Battra has the potential to be annoying. He can dodge every single move with the exception of your extra-powerful thermonuclear breath! He also attacks and buzzes around a lot, which can be quite annoying in itself. In order to raise your spirit, you have to run over to him and repeatedly bonk into him! Just keep bonking until your spirit is high, and then run backwards until you can release your super-charged breath (and hope he doesn't attack you before you can do so). However, if you collected those two item panels I told you to collect, you will have two of the red ones. Pop one of those, and your spirit will rise a lot faster, which makes the battle a whole lot easier. The battle has a Medium difficulty without the red items, and its Easy with them. After blasting Battra a few times, he'll go down in flames.
However, it's not over yet! There is ANOTHER BATTRA! He is still in larva form on the other side of the bay, but will soon pupate! Run to him really quickly, going down the path you used to get to the first Battra. Better hope you got a good look at the layout earlier. DO NOT TAKE THE "SHORTCUT" ACROSS THE BAY! It's too slow. Once you reach 2-A, go up to 4-A. If you were fast enough, you'll be able to kill the larva Battra in one shot. If you were to slow, you'll have to face Battra again, the same as last time. Once the second Battra goes boom, the level is done.
Stage 5: Tokyo part I
Well, since you're in Tokyo now, you'd think the game is almost over. Well, it is, but there are two levels in Tokyo, and they are the last two. This level here is quite interesting in the fact that the time of day changes depending on how much time you take. It starts out as night, goes into morning, and then it's daytime. Each one seems to correlate with the three paths you can take in this level. The thing is that it's time for Super Godzilla! If you get to Mecha-King Ghidorah quickly (before 50% of Tokyo is destroyed), then the lab will still be around and they will turn Godzilla into Super Godzilla after the battle. If you are to slow, then you will just not be Mr. Super G. However, you have another option. There are three little squares with an "S" on them in this level. One in 2-B, one in 2-A, and another in 4-A. If you collect them all, you'll turn into Super Godzilla! You'll be able to blast through the level (enemy forces and buildings no longer hurt), and battle Mecha-King Ghidorah with Super G, but be warned that you'll have a slightly tougher time in the next level, because Mecha-King Ghidorah will have plenty of time to destroy the lab. You'll turn back to regular Godzilla after the battle, and without the lab it will be a while before you become Super Godzilla again. If you do choose the slow path, be sure to take the time to collect items and destroy the Mother UFO in 1-A before collecting the "S" items an plowing your way towards MKG in 4-B. If you choose the quick path, then go up to 2-B through the middle of 1-B, move to the right in 2-B, and plow a path through the buildings in 3-B to get to Mecha-King Ghidorah in 4-B. Collect a few items around him, and begin the battle!
Mecha-King Ghidorah
HP: 800
Height: 150 meters
Weight: 70,000 metric tons
Recommended Items: the green ones
Difficulty: Extremely Hard (Easy with Super G)
Moves:
One Gravity Ray - It hurts of course
Two Gravity Rays - Obviously hurts more
Three Gravity Rays - Guess how much it hurts
Godzilla Grip - Well duh it hurts!
If you decided to take the quick easy later hard now path, then Mecha-King Ghidorah will be the toughest thing you ever will face! Godzilla does stand a chance, but not much of one. Better hope you have a few continues to waste on this one. You can still beat this guy though, ironically it just takes time. Try to plow through the body slams and back him in the corner. If he's cornered, then you'll get a few attacks out before being sent backwards. Just keep whittling him down with tail whips and body slams and the like. Do not take to much time setting up an attack after the punch. If you do, MKG will latch on the Godzilla Grip and zap you into a world of pain! Do not to retreat much, because Mecha-King Ghidorah will destroy more of the city while your gone. Try to inflict more then 100 pts of damage, because when you continue he will get 100 back. Just keep at it, and MKG will eventually fall (along with your score). However, if you are Super Godzilla, this bout is very easy! Just beat on MKG for a bit, using the time to get the hang of Super-G. Still be cautions of the Godzilla grips though; you still can't set up attacks for very long. Be sure to use the charged up punches. Mecha-King Ghidorah should fall with no problem, except for the fact that after spending your energy you'll become regular Godzilla again.
Stage 6: Tokyo part II
After beating MKG, a giant ball of energy called "Bagan" will appear and destroy all of Tokyo! Well, at least it says it does, because the level looks exactly the same as when you left it, only with a red sky. Any item you took you still have. Any building you destroyed is still destroyed. The only reason it's the 6th level is because the score screen says so. Anyways, if you collected the three "S" items, Super Godzilla will now be normal Godzilla, and has to face Bagan as regular old Godzilla for a while, until they scrounge up more energy. If you let less then 50% of Tokyo to be destroyed before, then there will be a special red square right below you at 3-B (the path you made before is still there). It will turn you into Super Godzilla right away! But whatever "path" you chose, you simply have to go to the purple dot in 1-B (or 2-B), and beat Bagan to win the game!
Bagan
HP: 900
Height: 150 meters
Weight: 280,000 metric tons
Recommended Item: ANYTHING!
Difficulty: Near Impossible (Hard with Super Godzilla)
Moves:
Claw Slash - Hurts a lot
Energy Stars - Hurts a lot more then a lot
Plasma Beam - Hurts more than anything
You could probably count the number of people who have beaten Bagan as normal Godzilla on one hand. So, either collect the three "S" items or don't let Mecha-King Ghidorah destroy too much, or you are in big trouble! He is still not easy as Super Godzilla, though. If you collected the three "S" items before, you will have to hold your own as regular G for a while. Just stand back in the corner and block, hoping that Bagan doesn't kill you, and wait the long time for the Super X to come and turn you into Super G. Try to charge up your punches as long as possible, but make sure to hit Bagan before he attacks you. You probably won't have time to get a navel beam off, but even if you do it doesn't do as much damage as you would like it to do. It's a long battle with massive blasts of energy coming off both sides. Stick with body slams unless you get a good chance to use the super thermonuclear breath. Never let up on your attacks, because Bagan will attack you if you don't attack him. After punching him, try to follow up before his spirit bar gets to the maximum. It's best to have some healing items before hand, especially a gold one, because you are going to need them. The two are evenly matched, and just one item is all it takes to turn the tide of battle. But whatever it is, it's all just a test of what you already know. Mind what you have learned, save you it can. And good luck, your going to need it.
Once you whooped Bagan (unless he whooped you), you win the game! Congratulations! Just watch the anti-climatic ending and watch Godzilla walk off as the credits roll. This game is pretty easy as a whole, but if you have beaten it, you still have earned it.
Miscellaneous Tips:
Cheat!
Level skip:
Press A two times, B two times, X two times, and Y two times at the title screen. Then, press L and R during game play to go strait to the next level.
Well, that's about all the information I could give you. I hope it is enough for you to succeed. It's a fun little game, and if you can find it for a fun little price, then go for it! If you have a Super Nintendo, of course. Special thanks to Varan of his great online FAQ, which was a big help to me.
