Cytoskeleton

The cytoskeleton is a system of several types of very fine protein fibers. It consists of a network of microtubules, microfilaments, and intermediate filaments that run through the cytoplasm of the cell. They serve a variety of mechanical and transport functions. The cytoskeleton shapes the cell and organizes the cytoplasm. In the photos below you can see the cytoskeleton as viewed through a microscope.
