DC comics started in 1934 by Malcolm Wheeler Nicholsan, and was originally called National Allied Publications. They publish many well known super heroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Hawkman, and the Green Lantern. They also publish Vertigo comics, and many others. The DC multiverse has many distinct alternate realities with very developed alternate versions of their characters, especially Superman and Batman.

In 1986, DC published the first and arguably greatest inter-company comic book crossover, Crisis on Infinite Earths. In this story the various alternate DC realities were being destroyed by the Anti-monitor. Various surviving heroes banded together to save all of reality, resulting in one DC mainstream universe surviving, containing various characters created by DC and from other companies DC acquired like Fawcett and Quality comics. DC history was forever divided into pre-crisis and post crisis terms. The concept of the multiverse has since returned in DC comics.
