Cockroaches and ants eat food from your kitchen while you're asleep. They are not as rude as your friends: they leave enough for you to eat. They are humble and lack ambition, they even run away. They know that you are better than them, they just ask that they can stay. Everyone can use some company, and they feel you can use some more. So let them have a home with you, that is what they implore. You are rich, compared to them, and your education does dwarf theirs. They don't even need their own room – you'll hardly know they're there. Just leave a biscuit out at night, sometimes, or a piece of apple or some peanut butter. Chase them away on sight, if you must, but it will be kind of you to leave them dinner. I know, I know, you want them gone, and you don't like having them near. But I saw them again, just the other day, and they really hope you'll reconsider. You see, they just don't like the other homes as much, and they didn't like living at your neighbor's. So they got together and took a vote about which home everyone liked best and in the end they picked yours. |

Considered "they all liked best" rather than "everyone liked best".
Considered "but it will be kind if you do leave them dinner" etc, but the meaning is slightly different: in a few places, I chose meaning over more perfect reading or balanced them how I felt happy with them.
