KNIGHTS IN SHINING ARMOR ("slumming it")

There are knights in shining armor
wearing leather jackets
walking down the street at 2 AM
with piercings in their ears and tattoos on their necks.

You say that I am "slumming it,"
Loving people who are
unsuccessful instead of
the doctors and lawyers
from your social circles
or from my college classes

But they are pure of heart.
Sure they are disenfranchised
and sometimes unreliable,
showing up three hours late to work,
but what you don't understand
is that they have a fire
burning inside of them
to change the world,
but because they were
never given an education
or a chance to use it,
that fire is burning themselves up
from the inside.

just remember that though
your circle of friends is richer,
my circle of friends is richer in spirit.
