The Fugees at the BET award

It was the Black Entertainment Television Awards in the US last night (Tuesday).

They're a big deal in the States and Halle Berry, Usher, Missy Elliott and Mariah Carey all made the effort to go.

It was hosted by husband and wife duo Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith, but not that many winners turned up to collect their gongs.

There were a lot of video taped messages, but the normally squeaky clean Destiny's Child livened the ceremony up by giving three lucky male stars, including Nelly, a lap dance.

The re-united Fugees kicked off the night's proceedings, but Lauryn Hill's voice was a bit shaky at the start of 'Killing Me Softly'.

However, it did pick up and Lauryn put the dodgy start down to being a bit "over-zealous" in rehearsals.

And there's more good news for Fugee fans - there were whisperings heard backstage that there could be a new Fugees album next year - their first for nearly ten years.

Destiny's Child plan to split up at the end of September
R&B act Destiny's Child have been named best group at a US awards ceremony, having announced their plan to disband.

The trio performed after winning the Black Entertainment Television (BET) award in Los Angeles, which also named Ray star Jamie Foxx best actor.

Rapper Kanye West won the male hip-hop artist and video prizes and his protege John Legend was named best new artist.

Alicia Keys was best female R&B artist while 1990s hip-hop band The Fugees reunited on stage.

Lifetime achievement

Backstage the group, who have not recorded an album together since 1996's Grammy Award-winning The Score, said they hoped to release a new album next year.

Actors Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith hosted the ceremony at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

At the start of the event she told potential award winners: "Do not thank God if you can't show or perform your work in church."

But Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child said, as the band accepted their award from actress Halle Berry: "I am sorry Will and Jada but we want to thank God for this."

Usher was named best male R&B artist, Regina King took the best actress prize and singer Gladys Knight was given a lifetime achievement award.

Collecting her award, R&B star Alicia Keys said: "This is for all my people who are really trying to dream big dreams."

Destiny's Child have had a string of hits since 1998, including Survivor.

Earlier this month they announced they planned to split up when their world tour ends in September.

BET award winners are selected by executives from entertainment companies, record labels and the media, except the viewers' choice award in which fans vote for their favourite video.
