there are bunny rabbits on the walls, painted
with silver gray finger paints. stealing
granny's cabbage, their pink finger-button
noses a-twitter, looking like sinister
gremlins in this twilight, under her bedroom
window, in the pansies and the tulips that
mother painted. there's a mouse there, in
the rhododendrons with a plan of escape from
that feisty alley cat at the corner of the
house. the azalias are full of the robin
family, and a preying mantis, arms folded in
silent mastication. the stars are on the
ceiling like a bag of faery-dust sprinkled
for hannah's protection. the golden puppy by
her crib stands sentinal over baby-girl.
daddy's in the corner, on the wall, in his
rocker, with a book, and a smile, and a
watchful loving eye.
