The Fortune teller

Life had been good to me
I thought I had it all
But for some reason
I felt lonely and small

Somehow I was empty
and needed to be healed
I refused to believe
my fate was sealed

What was my prospects
and my ability?
Was the answer to be found
in the prophecy?

I went to a seeress,
sensible and well-read
I was doubtful and sceptical
but then I finally said:

"Fortune-teller,
what does the future hold?
Tell me it's secrets
What can you unfold?"

The sibyl became silent
and thought for a while
Then she lowered her eyes
with a secretively smile

She examined each line
softly in my hand
Silently she said: "There's
something you must understand"

"The future is nothing
you can possibly create
You can never avoid
meeting your fate"

"You think you are living
the life of your dreams
But things are not always
as good as it seems"

"Life might be a game
But beware and behold
You are fooling yourself
All that glitters is not gold"

I felt ready to drop
All she said was true
When I had recovered
I asked her anew:

"If all I have done...
If I have been living a lie...
Should not I be happier
if I just lie down and die?"

Again her answer was
prudent and sincere:
"Pity oneself makes
self-effacing appear"

"You bide your time but
appearances are deceptive
Nothing changes by itself
so you have to be receptive"

What did she mean?
What could I change?
Her suggestions confused me
and felt out of range

She continued to smile
as she looked into my eyes
"I feel how you doubt
but listen to my advice"

"I see so many people
Each one of them a destiny
Lives founded on empty dreams
Nothing but plain misery"

"But in you I see a glow
A will to change for the better
You have what it takes
A balance of mind and matter"

”Take plenty of time
Think and be reflective
Aim for your goals
but be very selective”

”No one is as blind
as he who refuses to see
A closed mind
will never set a spirit free”

”You can escape others
or just follow the flow
But what is hidden in snow
will appear in thaw”

”Never fear to be yourself
Boldly ventured is half won
This is what you’ll be remembered for
when you are long time gone”

”It is really very simple
All I have to say
Just live each day of your life
as it is your very last day”

”We always have this longing
for things we can not get
You can’t bring anything to Heaven
Don’t let it be much to your regret”

”The architect of your own fortunes
That is what you truly are
I can not give you all the answers
You are your own lucky star”

When I went home that night
I could not help but crying
I, who thought I had been so alive
had slowly been draining and dying

It had been such a good experience
But oh, how painful to awake
To be aware of all the good things
I had been about to forsake

My life, my existence
Nothing but an empty, black hole
A future founded on shattered dreams
A fading silhouette of my soul

Thank you, dear Prophetess
For making me reflect and think
The chain is not more solid
than it's weakest link

I could never have imagined
go-ahead spirit could cause a fall
Life had been an illusion
I had not had anything at all.
