Christmas Stockings

There are at least two different explanations for
the hanging of stockings.
The first is simply that children used to set out
their shoes on Christmas Eve to be filled with goodies
by St. Nicholas; this tradition carried over to stockings.

The first people to mention stockings being hung from
a chimney were illustrator Thomas Nast and storywriter
George Webster during the 19th century.

The second legend also attributes the stocking hanging
custom to St. Nicholas. Legend says that St. Nicholas
once tossed coins down the chimney of three sisters
who were doomed to remain unmarried because they didn't
have a dowry. Lucky for them the coins fell directly
in their stockings that were hanging by the fire to dry.
Thanks to the coins the sisters found husbands.

Some believe that an orange in your stocking symbolizes
the gold St. Nicholas left in the sisters’ stockings.
Others think that Santa puts an apple in the toe and
an orange in the heel if you have been good.
