To Halloween!

I treasure the memories of this special night
When Halloween suddenly comes to life,
like some huge theatrical play
where everything comes together just right. 

For Halloween is the time when
witches and princesses, 
Ghouls and clowns 
Vampires and Angels 
all come around. 

And I still listen expectantly 
to hear each child say,
the sweet ancient ritual of 
"Trick or Treat" 
before they scamper back 
into the dark goblin filled streets. 
 

With a cryptic smile I return to my seat 
remembering how it was when I was young 
How I'd stay out late as I could, 
trying go to every house in my neighborhood 

I remember getting scared when the dark wind blew cold, 
and scattered the dry leaves nosily across my feet, 
and the way those big shadowy trees swayed and rattled, 
in eerie moonlight always made my heart skip a beat 

That's when I'd realize how quiet the world had become 
as I'd turned around to look for my friends 
OH No! Halloween was gone as suddenly as it had come, 
and here I was alone in the huge spooky dark again. 

I'd run home then.
