In its review of his debut at LINCOLN CENTER in a concert performance of Franco Alfano’s rarely-performed opera, Risurrezione, The New York Times singled out tenor Michele Fiammardente for his “fine singing” and “stylish Italianate tenor”.
Michele recently made his Oriental debut in Hong Kong (CHINA) as “Pinkerton” in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. He is currently being considered for a return engagement in Hong Kong in 2003 as “Turiddu” in Cavalleria Rusticana and ”Canio” in Pagliacci, as well as productions in Beijing and Shanghai. Last season, Michele also made his debut with the Palm Beach Opera (Florida) under the baton of the late Maestro Anton Guadagno, as “Pollione” in Bellini’s Norma.
Mr. Fiammardente has established an international reputation as an artist who combines both vocal beauty and dramatic flair. He has performed with opera companies on four continents – Europe, North America, Asia and Australasia, achieving consistent critical acclaim. His attractive stage presence and subtle characterizations have won him wide audience appeal. Among his many appearances are those with Lyric Opera of Queensland, Brisbane (AUSTRALIA), Canterbury Opera Trust, Christchurch (NEW ZEALAND), Opera Northern Ireland, Belfast (UK), Edmonton Opera, Calgary Opera, Saskatoon Opera Association, Opera Lyra, Ottawa (CANADA), Sacramento Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Greater Buffalo Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera Delaware, Boston Concert Opera, and others.
Michele currently numbers over 50 leading operatic tenor roles in his repertoire (see complete repertoire list below). While his particular passion is for the operas of the verismo school, he has performed a wide range of Italian opera, especially Puccini and Verdi. His linguistic and musical versatility has permitted him to embrace the German tenor roles of Richard Strauss and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, several French roles, including “Don Jose,” “Werther,” and “Hoffman,” Slavic operas, notably those of Janacek, the rarities of the Latvian composer, Alfreds Kalnins, and a number of English and American operas. He has likewise been featured in concert and recitals of new American art songs.
Risurrezione (Franco Alfano); Lincoln Center debut, New York debut
“There was some fine singing, too. … Michele Fiammardente brought an eager and stylish Italianate tenor sound to the … role of Dimitri.”
New York Times
“Un cast di buon voci che nel … tenore Michele Fiammardente ha trovato le sue punte di diamante … Degno su comprimario è Michele Fiammardente, dotato anche d’una certa esuberanza, che … ben s’addice alla figura del principe sedutorre. Notevole il duetto del primo atto e l’aria ‘No, Katiusha, non rider cosi’.”
[A cast of beautiful voices in which … tenor Michele Fiammardente found highlights of diamond-like brilliance ... [A] distinguished counterpart was Michele Fiammardente, given to a certain exuberance, which … added considerably to his portrayal of the prince seducer. Notable were the first act duet and [his] aria ‘No, Katiusha, non rider cosi’.]
America Oggi, New York, NY
“A fine, solid cast … As Dimitri, Michele Fiammardente sang with a healthy, darkish, lyric tenor and an ardor worthy of his name.”
American Record Guide
Fanciulla del West
“As Dick Johnson ... Michele Fiammardente made the most of his beautiful tenor voice.”
Opera News
Tosca
“As Tosca's lover Cavaradossi, Michele Fiammardente shines with all the splendor of an accomplished tenor, particularly in his luminous delivery of the “E lucevan le stelle” in the third act ... (and) the strength and rich texture of his voice were first class.”
Sacramento Union, Sacramento, CA
“To Michele Fiammardente as Cavaradossi must go praise for a completely rounded performance. Acting and singing were a fine amalgam. He looks splendid, young and fit. He moves with purpose and balance. A convincing painter, he became the perfect lover as the plot unfolded. And as well, his tenor voice is completely suited to the musical and dramatic role. He gave every auditory appearance of letting the voice grow gradually to unleash the passions of love and tragedy as well as credible reaction to the growth of Scarpia's power. Above all, he responded to Tosca with an amount of sound that in turn balanced, or reinforced, or dominated her outpouring to a thrilling degree.”
Music in New Zealand, Auckland, NEW ZEALAND
“Michele Fiammardente's performance was a personal triumph, combining a rich voice and fine acting skills. To see a young, slim, handsome, tall tenor with a really beautiful, powerful voice is to find a rare combination. No one needs a crystal ball to predict a brilliant future for him.”
Gold Coast Bulletin, Brisbane, Queensland, AUSTRALIA
Cavalleria Rusticana
“Vocal honors go to the Mascagni ... with Michele Fiammardente's fiery Turiddu ... “
Opera News
“Michele Fiammardente as Turiddu has a thrilling tenor that will surely become finer with each year of his career. Endowed with both youth and physical attractiveness, he is a tenor to keep an eye on.“
Delaware State News, Wilmington, DE
Macbeth
“Michele Fiammardente soared in the part of MacDuff ... (he) fashioned the role with mounting passion, wonderfully contained until the final scenes. His audience rapport is irresistible, his quality is brilliant yet immensely attractive, and his acting is always in accord with his musical interpretation ...“
Worcester Telegram, Worcester, MA
La Boheme
“The robustness of Michele Fiammardente's tenor was an excellent foil (for Mimi), and comparisons with famous recordings did not diminish the pleasure of his easy attack and sustained tone. He had, too, that rare ability to adjust to participation in the vivacity of the male quarters.”
The Stage, London, UK
L' Amico Fritz
“Tenor Michele Fiammardente's easy stage manner and secure singing as Fritz ... rose above the shallow pretext of the libretto and created moments of sincere expression.”
Opera Canada
La Traviata
“Vocally, Michele Fiammardente brought a lovely flow of tone to Alfredo's arias and exchanges. Demonstrating both security and vocal projection, his treatment of vowels was also highly expressive.”
