The Rebellious Child

When the Sun has set in the West and daylight dims
And you sit in your recliner remembering older hymns.
The lyrics can be so precious as you hum a favorite tune
Words that give you assurance that Jesus is coming soon.

But reaching for your Bible as you turn on the nearest lamp
You need to replace a handkerchief that is already damp
As the song has also caused a few tears of remorse,
Although you know Jesus, and that he is the only source

Of life, and love and joy, and thoughts come flooding in
That you're unable to reach a loved one who is so deep in Sin.
You feel you bear the guilt because of what his life became
Disregard for discipline had filled your life with shame.

Because of His refusals to accept any kind of rule,
It was extremely difficult to keep your child in school.
With the passing of time came the reality of your fear
That in rebellion he would make it fully clear

That what you have to say, He has already heard,
And he will no longer allow you to utter a word
About his habits or the condition of his soul,
His friends, His living arrangements or life's goal.

You have constant fear that one day your child will go
Into eternity without the savior that you know,
An event that would certainly tear you apart
And forever end any chance to change his heart.

Weep no more, my child, for God has heard your plea,
And says "Praise and Rejoice when you come to me."
Have confidence in the promise that I gave to you
And gratitude for what you know I am able to do.

The grief and sorrow that tears you apart
Will be changed to melody in your heart
You will recieve joy and happiness, too
That everyone else will recieve through you.
