elegy written on a city parkbench

Separate, still equal

You hear not what I say

It’s not that you don’t listen

But these words still can’t convey

Truly black and white

Predestined to be mute

Emotions need no tongues

The blurred vision’ to dissolute

Separate, yet equal

The same yet still apart

Fate had willed our paths to stray

Separate, not equal

Don’t die for yesterday
