• Samuel Martin Ballard b: 18 OCT 1844 in Knox, TN and died 1 Feb 1923 in Solo, AR. He married Margaret Isabel Coker born 13 July 1854. She was the daughter of William and Mary Lee Coker and a great niece of General Robert E. Lee. She was born 13 July 1851 in Knoxville, Co., TN and died 27 Apr 1931 in Pope Co., AR, and buried in Solo Cemetery.

• Mary Ellen Ballard (Molly) b: 1859 in Knox, TN. She married Vincent Edward Wolfe on 7 Apr 1881. They settled on Fork Mt., east of Middle Fork, Pope Co., AR.

  Notes on Samuel Ballard: He settled on Dry Creek 3-4 miles west of the other family members but by 1881 they moved to the mountain and homesteaded land adjoining his sister Rebecca on the west.
  He was a Postmaster until his death 1 Feb 1923 and a school teacher. His youngest son Albert was postmaster until he moved away, and his brother in law, Edgar A. Underhill, received the appointment and served until the office was discontinued. 
  Notes on Josie Ballard & Yank Morris: They lived in and near Russellville where Yank operated a blacksmith shop.

  Andrew Jackson Ballard, born in east Tennessee during the 1820's, came to northeast Pope County in 1878. His father was John Ballard who moved to east Tennessee from North Carolina. Andrew married Nancy Franklin, a niece of Benjamin Franklin, about 1843. they had two sons and five daughters. All of the children married in Tennessee.
  
  Andrew lost his wife prior to coming to Pope Country but in 1878, he along with his family and their families arrived by wagons in Pope Country. Four families settled near the area later known as Solo. Those BALLARDS who came from TN lived the remainder of their lives in the Solo area and are buried in Solo cemetery except Molly and Josie.
  
  Samuel M. Ballard was a farmer and school teacher. He was appointed the first postmaster at Solo when the office was established. He served as Solo postmaster until his death. His youngest son, Albert was postmaster until he moved away, and his brother-in-law, Edgar A. Underhill, received the appointment and served until the office was discontinued.

  In the early 1880's, George and Bethena Rudder, the Ballard family, and a few friends came by covered wagons and settled in northern Pope Country near Solo community...........The families first lived in their covered wagons until the land could be cleared for fields and a home and barn built from the logs taken from the cleared ground. For a while, with the important duties of cleaning land and building homes, there was not time to build cellars and smoke houses, so the families stored their food in a large cave. All of the families stored their fruit and potatoes in the cave, and when food was needed each family would take what was needed. These families survived by helping and sharing with one another.

  John Ballard, Sr. born 12 Apr 1787 in VA or NC, died after 1860 in Smith County, TN. He married Ann Hankins born 1794 of TN or SC, and died after 1870 in Smith Co., TN. . She was the daughter of Joseph Hankins, Sr. and Sarah Jane both of South Carolina.
