You
pull open the door to the Lodging House for Newsboys, and immediately jump back
as a grey-haired man steps through. The
man starts, then chuckles.
Oh, hullo. I didn’t see
you comin’ in.
He
gives you a warm smile and extends a hand.
I’m Mr. Foulkes. I run
this here Lodgin’ House. You here
lookin’ to become a newsie?
When
you shake your head in the negative, the old man shrugs.
Well, then, you must be lookin’ to learn more about me
kids. You’ll find their stories here in
the lobby. You can learn about them
upstairs in their bunkrooms, both the boys and the girls. If you’re int’rested in history and facts
about newsies, feel free to look at the papers in my office. And if you’d like to see some recipes that we
like around here, head back into the kitchen.
Foulkes
steps past you, but stops and adds a comment before he heads down the street.
Lots of people think all newsie lodging houses were involved in
that strike a while back. My boys and
girls participated, but you won’t find their names in no newspaper
articles. If you’re looking for those
famous newsies like Cowboy and them, head over to the Manhattan Lodging House.
