Frodo and Sam lay huddled against the craggy mountainside, trying to keep out of the bitter wind. As Frodo slept, a disturbing vision filled his mind. He saw Gandolf as he had seen him last, fighting the Balrog, but his vision continued past what he had seen: Gandalf was falling into the deep chasm, striking the Balrog with a sword, and finally disappearing completely. Frodo again felt the hopelessness he had felt yesterday, and woke with an anguished gasp: "Gandalf!"

Sam was by his side immediately. Mr. Frodo often seemed to take comfort from Sam's warm solidness pressed against him. Sam stroked Frodo's shoulder, trying to calm him. "It was just a dream, Mr. Frodo," he said, trying to squash a pang of jealousy: Frodo was dreaming of Gandalf! When he, Sam, was tormented by painfully delicious dreams of Frodo that made him wake up gasping! Sam tried not to look at Frodo's delicately perfect furry feet because that always led to dangerous imaginings of the rest of Frodo's body...Sam hoped they could lay back down where he could "innocently" enjoy the soft warmth of Frodo's sleeping body. Unfortunately, Frodo decided to take advantage of the fact that they were awake to continue their journey.

When they finally stopped for lunch, Frodo plopped down dejectedly."What food do we have, Sam?" he asked. Sam looked in his pack. "Lembas bread. And look! more Lembas bread!" He broke off a bit for each of them, tossing one to Frodo. They ate in silence. Then Sam grinned at Frodo and said "You know I don't usually hold with foreign food, Mr. Frodo, but the elfish stuff isn't half bad!" He was happy to see that made Frodo smile, though in truth the bread tasted like wood shavings. "Nothing ever dampens your spirits, Sam," Frodo said fondly, smiling at him. Sam smiled sincerely back. How could I not be happy? he thought to himself. I'm with you!
