Fundamental Philosophy
Given
enough practice, instruction, and work, any individual can create professional
level writing. Only those writers who are passionate about their writing, and
who have something they want to share with the world will be able to use this
instruction to create truly great writing. The Association assumes that any
person who joins has these qualities to some degree or another. It is the
objective of the Association to help MTU students develop their creative writing
skills, and their passion for writing. Ideally, they will not only improve how
well they write, but how well they understand their beliefs and feelings on what
they are writing about.

Suggestions/General Guidelines for Editing
People's Work
-
It's nice to have someone
recognize when the author has done something well, but that alone won't help
them improve their writing, which is why they came to you in the first place.
-
Use constructive comments.
Offer suggestions for improvement.
-
Never attack the author.
-
Try not to attack the writing
either. It isn't your enemy, there is no need to needlessly degrade it.
-
Remember how long the author has
worked on this writing.
-
It helps to thank them for putting
their necks out and letting you read their stuff.
-
NO RED PENS!
THEY ARE EVIL!
