Here are a few of my favorite poets and novelists. This will, of course, be just the "highlights", so to speak. If I were to list every author who's work I enjoy, I'd need about six websites.
Edgar Allen Poe:
This is probably an obvious choice, but I have been enamoured of Poe's works since high school. I don't know that there is any such thing as a bad piece written by Poe, but here are my personal favorites.
Annabel Lee
This was the first poem (other than The Raven) that I ever read by Poe. I was drawn by the fairy tale images and the profound sense of loss in this piece. It may very well be my all time favorite poem.
A Dream Within A Dream
The sense of helplessness and futility echo in my own life.
The Cask of Amontillado
Even in a world of The Blair Witch Project and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this is STILL scary as hell.
Shadow: A Parable
This is a great mood piece on the Plague.
Sylvia Plath:
Barren Woman
I love this piece for its sense of isolation and ts references to Greek mythos.
Lady Lazarus
The Nazi images are disturbing, but they underscore the deep anger that courses through this poem.
Two Sisters of Persephone
I like the contrast of the two sisters in this work, and the pale sister, is to me, pitiable in her bitterness.
