Doin' the Tao Thing

The Way, the Tao, is my guiding principal in life. Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching, especially section 8, has been close to my heart for years as a model of behaviour. The following is from the D.C. Lau translation.

Highest good is like water. Because water excels in

benefiting the myriad creatures without contending

with them and settles where none would like to be,

it comes close to the way.

In a home, it is the site that matters;

In quality of mind it is depth that matters;

In an ally it is benevolence that matters;

In speech it is good faith that matters;

In government it is order that matters;

In business affairs it is ability that matters;

In action it is timeliness that matters.

It is because it does not contend that it is never at fault.

Pooh, or rather Benjamin Hoff guided by A.A. Milne's Pooh, was the one who really brought the Tao to me in language that meshed with my life as a Western-cultured English-speaker, that is to say, really brought it into my life. Pooh taught me the all-important Taoist concept of the Thing To Do. Other bears of little brain like our dear (departed) family cat Clarence keep this simple, essential concept in plain view for me to learn and remember. I sometimes feel that I owe these little guys my life.

Paul Reps is the author and translator of Zen texts which I use in the way other religious people use their holy books like the Bible or Koran. His book Zen Telegrams (1957) has given me words, images, ideas that define my every-day world, from "Waterfall/ No Trouble At All" to "Brookside alive/ do not hurry friend/ you may arrive."

Some Personal Philosophizin':

You know the way, you know the Thing to Do, don't you? If you aren't sure, think of 17 reasons why you should do something and then you'll know the Thing to Do. If you stand on 17th Street at Mission in San Francisco, you'll see the mysterious old sign on top of Thrift Town that says "17 Reasons," pointed out to me by friends living at that corner where so many people meet tragedy (especially now that the cops are arresting everybody to make the place safe for yuppies). So "17 Reasons" helps make my decisions or at least makes me laugh at my need to make a decision. I bet 17 Reasons could help you, just as I bet you could think of 17 reasons it couldn't!

Another thing: since my partner died in October, 2001, I have gotten a pretty good boost of direction and energy from the East Bay Church of Religious Science. (A data-poor website- oh well, you'll just have to go see for yourself!)

When their choir leads the congregation in "This Little Light of Mine," I feel connected to a whole world and history of brave "little lights" in a world that often feels completely in darkness.
