Rain

I watched some raindrops, in a puddle dancin'
. .and had to wonder, where last they had been
Not from the clouds or sky, but before
. .this is a closed system only so much water no more
Since the birth of this planet has been that way
. .same then as 'tis t'day
What goes up comes down, freezes and thaws
. .an endless cycle that's just the way it goes
So I put this question to you
. .Who drank that water before you?
Did last it pass through the kidneys of kings
. .or role off in flight of the last condors wings
Was last it frozen in time
. .on top of a glacier
From a time before
. .any of us was here
Did you shower today
. . in the sweat of John Henry
Or bathe in the tears of
. .someones deepest fears
Who's face will your tears wash next
. .you can't even begin to guess
Did the water I drink tonight
. .once leave your Mother
.. ..when she gave you life
There is water in the life of everything
. .90 or so percent of all of us, you and me
Did some of the water in your backyard tree
. .mix up the last shot of some desperate junky
Did rain that fell on you in '73
. .today fall on me
Do we have this in common
. .with Tutenkamen
Was the water that tried to extinguish the Trade Center fire
. .tears that were once shed over Pearl Harbor
If we All cried hard enough for those starving from drought
. .could a flooding change be brought about
And the water you play in at the beach
. .how far was it's last reach
did black sands of Hawaii it once wet
. . or leak through the roof of some jungle hut
Did once it role down the streets of ancient Venice
. .Did the water that helped make this paper
. . once bathe Shakespear
I really want you to think about this
Enough of the water around us
. . what of the water in us
Did water in blood in my heart today
. .once pump through the veins of James Earl Ray
I can go on like this forever, but it's time for you to think
. .think about it every time you take a drink
We look for the ties that bind or one common link
. .Maybe now a raindrop can make you think
. .That our eternal brotherhood lies simply in
. .the water we drink
