I had a thought, a wonderful thought,
A thought that thrills my soul.
How I would enjoy being
Like Jesus Christ
In the things I think and do.
To be like Him in the power of love,
In compassion of deep concern;
To be like Him where you are involved,
To love you with all your faults.
To be like Him in serving you.
To weep over your deepest woes.
To give myself, without reserve,
Making sure your well-being
Comes first.
To be like Him in the face of death,
To give my life in place of yours;
To give mine up so you might live,
Or bear the blame for all your wrongs.
But another thought just crossed my mind.
These things I'm not able to do!
I'm only a man, with no power of my own.
I'm a failure as well as you.
When I would do good for someone else,
Or supply the love he seems to need;
To lift him up and help him stand
When his strength will not bear his weight.
But, alas, I cannot help him now,
I'm a man with many needs.
So I am a man with no good deeds.
I had another thought, a wonderful thought!
A thought that thrills my soul.
Even though I, by myself,
Cannot do these things,
I have a promise from the Kings of Kings.
I can do all things through Christ, My Lord;
Through Him I am made complete.
Then another thought flashed across my mind;
I am helpless in my own strength:
When I would do good for my fellowman,
That good I can't perform.
I'm helpless to act, because of inbred sin.
I need power that is not of me.
Another thought then came to me.
A scripture came to mind.
Ask what you will, and believe when you pray,
Then what you say will come to pass.
So I pray each day to be like Christ;
Let His mind dwell fully in me,
Then His thoughts will become my very own,
And I can do the impossible things.
