RED LEAVES

Lyrics: Nautilus Pompilius
Translated by: Tango

My city had courage and wealth
But one day it lost its mind
And mindless, it invented the plague,
Not knowing that it was the plague.
My city was tired of armbands and guns,
It prayed and it sang all spring,
And come autumn, it sent for killers
So the killers could kill the war.

The killers first killed the war,
And all those who wore uniforms,
Fine bedfellows made for the first time
The commander and all his men.
After that the killers went
For those who forged lethal steel,
For those who sowed the soldiers' bread,
And for those who gathered it in.

Red leaves are falling down
And are covered up by the snow,
Red leaves are falling down
And are covered up by the snow.

And when the killers were left all alone
In the centre of the circle of blood,
To find something to fill their days
They started to murder each other.
And the last, thinking that God yet remains
To fill trenches with warm rotting bodies
Climbed the stairs of bodies to heaven,
But fell down and broke his neck.

My city stood in spite of all deaths
And could stand for a century more,
But to fight evil it invented evil,
And its shroud became the snow.
The sun may yet rise once again,
And melt the ice in the city,
But I'm afraid to imagine the colour
That will run in that terrible thaw.

Red leaves are falling down
And are covered up by the snow,
Red leaves are falling down
And are covered up by the snow.
