Spain: A Rendition of Sorts

Sometimes I smell Spain.
Spring air brings sea-salt,
soil, rich oil, sangria.

Sometimes I smell Spain;
Sitting on cedar steps, sandalwood
Watching Sevilla sing;
Stock up on a setting unique.

Sometimes I soak Sangria
while soft fruit slips
from the corners of my mouth.
Slits in silk dresses. Satin masts
and tall ships with young boys
sauntering into Malaga. Madrigal.

Sometimes I think sound thoughts
Sometimes my smell takes form,
and I envision solace, solemnity,
and deep thinking. Sacrifice that
sinks into soulful slumbers while
sanity escapes screaming for
salvation and, it's all too late.

I take sips of water on Spanish shore.
Seven days and umpteen nights
and sounds of samba, salsa style
filling sterile streams of
wind, winding down
a silent street. Spain.
Quiet, sleeping tiger purring
songs from saddened stomach,
growls.

Sometimes I think Spain
and warm wash of bath water
and steamy nights and
heavy air and then
the sultry sting of memory.

She spends her spare time, either when she is not teaching or being taught, working as a cook in a well-known chain restaurant. She was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts and finds that she has trouble calling anywhere else she lives "home." She enjoys her own company and can often be found treating herself to dinner and movie alone. She finds it a good source of relaxation and entertainment, which is used in her writing as both a reflection of whatever epiphany she had that day and a direct satire of the nature of human beings.
