Keep Your Eyes On The Pacific

we traveled down the coast
in a beat-up green Chevy
that her father had leant to us
so we could see the Napa vineyards

and we drank the sun down
with wines that spanned decades
of west coast ambition
and we welcomed the birth of stars
in the sky and in our eyes
as the night held above
like a cosmic mirror
giving us the only
reasonable reflection
we could ever hope to see.

In winter, she plants roses

view from the bottom of the bottle
flowers wilting in a cracked vase
water dropping to the floor like tears
we are October leaves falling beside them
hardwood floor moans beneath our footsteps
heading upstairs to white linen sheets
and open windows with the moon outside
selling tickets for a front row view
and we laugh out loud as
the stars wink in approval.
