Permutation

The human panes that sandwich eternity
between a pair of scared thighs, cry
foul as they soar,

even raising welts on stars oddly,
above and out of
their own mythic
proportion

and juggling the constellations
until a quick physics catches
the trick, to pitch them back, one by one

into polluted pools of chance;
so the winding snake of pearly souls
twitters and trembles
before an epileptic goddess

at the poet’s fingertips,
because when the verses finally cool
their little jets,
the molecules must always align themselves into tears,

(singing their teary theory of strings
Into a tiny mathematical proof
of Hell)

Born 1959 and raised in the New York city area, Mr. Toppo graduated from the University of Connecticut with degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics. He has lived in Spain, Puerto Rico and México and currently works in Trenton, New Jersey, but spends half the year in Mexico City with his son, who continues to be his adoration.
