What Never Was

I set forth
on yet another journey
more alone than ever
but hardly more afraid.

Mistakes
outnumber regrets.
Lessons learned
outweigh the pain now.

Bridges smolder behind me
but my eyes are riveted
ever forward.

Who lost the battle?
Does it matter?
There were no winners
certainly not me.

None too humble
choosing rather
to allow life
to humble us all.

Space now adding
to the distance
"We" will be missed
as though "We" ever existed.

That term
dysfunctional
no longer applies
and that's a good thing
isn't it?
