M2M Perform at NJ School to Recognize Kids Against Terrorism Initiative
Jun 11, 2002

Earlier today M2M performed a live concert at West Brook Middle School in Paramus, New Jersey to recognize the students’ Kids Against Terrorism initiative. The school had recently earned the national Grand Prize of a community-improvement contest sponsored by the youth leadership organization Do Something (dosomething.org). At the event, students shared their experiences of September 11th, described their Kids Against Terrorism campaign, and enjoyed a performance and question-and-answer session/signing by M2M (Marion Raven & Marit Larsen).

The attacks on September 11th hit close to home when many of the students at West Brook lost parents and family members. When they learned about the chance to win a $500 grant from Do Something and a concert by M2M for helping the community, they launched a Kids Against Terrorism campaign to help students speak out and get informed about terrorism.

As part of the project, students created pamphlets on terrorism for youth in the school and community, scheduled educational speakers for assemblies, and are launching a website where facts on terrorism can be posted. The students will also be hosting open house meetings to help youth turn their feelings into actions that can help the community.

"After the horrific events of September 11th, we were left with millions of questions about the well being of our town, nation and even our planet," says 13-year-old student Kaitlyn Burger, who helped organize the anti-terrorism project. "Ever since we were little, New York City was a second home to us. To see something terrible happen to a place we love so much makes you realize that every person has to do their part to make whatever difference they can."

"Do Something is all about giving teens a voice in their community and helping them take action," said Marion, 17. "We are really excited to help young people make a difference."

As part of M2M’s "Stand Up, Speak Out, Do Something!" contest, students at more than 300 schools nationwide were challenged to start a Do Something Club to improve their school, community and world. Twenty-five schools received $500 grants to turn their ideas into action and West Brook Middle School received the national Grand Prize of a $500 grant and an M2M concert at their school.

THE BIG ROOM, M2M's second Atlantic album, is in stores now and Marit and Marion have lined up an extensive series of summer dates with labelmate Jewel. For more visit m2m.com.
