Members of the Liverpool Astronomical Society, (founded in 1881), will display several telescopes for viewing the Moon and other objects in the night sky, if clear. There will also be an illustrated talk on astronomy.

EVENT REPORT - Dave Owen

Persistent rain was forecast for this day/evening. Unfortunately, this weather forecast proved to be 100% accurate.

Whatever. Me and Geoff Regan took a couple of slide shows and the Liverpool AS laptop PC to the Otterspool Visitors' Centre. On arrival at about 19:00 we found that Jim Stacey was talking to the two Park Rangers that had helped organise this event, Paul Sutter and Ian Gregory.

Geoff then had to leave for about an hour so I was left to my own devices, a laser pointer and a collection of slides of solar system objects. Just before I started the slide show Jim Stacey was able to set up his 5 inch Maksutov telescope in a corner. The Rangers also offered free tea and coffee to the dozen or so visitors who had arrived, despite the rain.

After I had finished with the solar system I showed a few slides of objects within our galaxy and a few objects even further away. By this time it was time for a break and, as the number of visitors was down to a handful, I showed them some photos of our last Sidewalk event at Halewood Country Park on Fri 13 Sep 2002. I also showed some photos of the recent visit of John Dobson to Liverpool, including photos of the 30 inch Dobsonian.

The event ended with the arrival of Geoff as I was using the laptop PC to show the Sky for Windows planetarium program. Our next event is at Stadt Moers Visitor Centre in Knowsley on Fri 8 Nov 2002. Hopefully, the weather will allow us to use the 16 inch Sidewalk telescope again.
