PIKACHU'S VACATION
Rating: 7 (1 being worst; 10 being best)
Best for: Children and dimwit pokemon "watchers," but still cute for everyone else.
Plot Summary: Ash, Misty, and Brock stop at a pokemon vacation spot to rest their pokemon. The pokemon set off for a good time, but as soon as they get there, Togepi starts crying with hunger. They finally get it to sleep with Bulbasaur's "Bulba-bye," when a gang of pokemon (Snubbull, Raichu, Merril, and Cubone) come along, talking and laughing loudly. Pikachu tries to quiet them, but they don't care and wake up the baby. So follows a fierce competition between the "bad" pokemon and Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Pikachu, along with Pikachu's usual task of watching Togepi ("Pi-pi-pi"). Eventually, Charizard gets his head stuck in a metal thing, and all of Ash's and Brock's pokemon and some of Misty's can't pull him out. After a brief pep talk from Pikachu; Raichu, Merril, and Snubbull help. It's still not enough. Finally, Cubone decides to help. They manage to free Charizard, and the rest of the vacation passes in relaxation, happiness, and harmony. Touching, no da?
Now for my review: I like it. It's a light way to start out the darker main feature. And, while I prefer the human characters, it's also kind of interesting to see the pokemon's personalities. The opening song (Vitamin C, "Vacation") is good. Also, since this is the first part of the first movie, you would expect to see as many pokemon as possible, and they do this by making little interludes with pokemon that didn't make it into the plot. One criticism I have is the pokedex. How would it be able to monitor the pokemon when it is just a little box, usually in Ash's pocket? The plot would still be comprehensible without the narration of an inanimate object.
