The Strokes: Is This It

The Strokes: Is This It

There's a group of bands getting a lot of hype nowadays, labeled as the "return of rock," or something similar. The list almost always includes (and usually exclusively) the Strokes, the Hives, the Vines, and the White Stripes. I have heard at least some, if not all, of the material these new bands have released. The Strokes are the one band of them all that deserve the attention that they are getting.

The Strokes may have (and probably should have if they don't) their name because their music is a stroke of genius. They manage to have a classic rock vibe, yet sound completely original. It is both fresh and somewhat nostalgic at the same time.

Is This It is a pleasantly melodic rock 'n' roll record. The songs are vibrant and catchy as hell. The tones are fantastic--the songs are a perfect blend of clean and dirty guitar sounds, muffled vocals, smooth bass lines, and thumping drums. It is something that is completely opposite of the drones of metal bands that dominate rock radio right now. That is definitely part of the appeal of this band, but the music stands strong on its own, regardless of current trends.

I really can't find the words to properly express my adoration for this album. It is nothing fancy, but it is an extremely enjoyable musical experience. The Strokes are probably my favorite new band of the past few years. If you really enjoy rock and roll, you'll love this album. Actually, I encourage everyone to give this album a try, because it is just so good. Needless to say, the Strokes blow away all the other new rock bands that are getting so much attention and hype.
