Nickelback Win Best New Country Artist
Nickelback were big winners last night at the UCMAs. Here they are in what they refer to as their "street-wise hardcore/major badass" mode.
May 29, 2002 - Last Night at the Unreal Country Music Awards, up-and-comers Nickelback won several awards, including the coveted "Best New Artist" award.
"We definitely didn't see this coming," commented Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger, "In fact, we didn't even know we were a country band."
A country band they are, and a darn good one at that, according to the UCMA board of judges.
"Nickelback is simply the most kick-ass country band since Garth Brook's early days," said Hank Learer, one member of the board, "I would say they even make the Dixie Chicks look like street corner whores. Others would just say that is blasphemy."
One event goer, Ben Dopher, had this to say, "Nickelback does enough bitching and moaning to be a country band, but not about the right things. They don't have a single song about a Ford pickup or losing their hounddog after getting in a fight at the bar. I don't think that they deserve UCMA nominations, let alone the awards they won."
Regardless of what naysayers would have, Nickelback took home 4 different awards last night at the event. In addition to their "Best New Artist" award, they won for "Most Overplayed Song", "Best Record to Reach Mainstream Radio", and "Most Catchy Song that You Eventually Come to Hate."
According to some analysts, Nickelback may be the most successful crossover country success ever. But, despite their success, the band remains humble.
"We're just a rock band that loves to play music," spewed Kroeger, "If the country audience chooses to accept us, then so be it. I just wish Hero [from the recent Spider-Man soundtrack] could have been released in time for nominations. Actually, now that I think about it, I fucking hate country music."
If by hate he means love, then Nickelback surely has a long career ahead of them in country music.
