An eerie howl fills the air as a
devil dog is released. "Come on
Houndoom. This wuss thinks he can beat
us in a real battle."
"I don't just think I can
beat you. I know I can."
"Oh, yeah? Send out your puny
pokémon."
"Puny? Hah. I'll show you
puny. Go, Sandslash!" The sand
mouse
appeared with a short cry, then turned
to face its dark opponent. "We'll
just see who is
puny when this is over."
Kris just stood in amazement. She
knew she should run while she had
the chance, but she just stood there,
frozen in place.
"Because you say I'm weak,
I'll let you try and prove it by
letting your
Houndoom make the first move."
"Thats a move you'll regret,
boy. Houndoom, use your
flamethrower!"
"Alright Sandslash, use your
dig."
Seconds before the flame made
contact, Sandslash went underground.
The shocked Houndoom just stood there;
half in shock, half because its trainer
hadn't
given any order. A few moments later,
the ground beneath it began to tremble
and crack.
Suddenly, the Sandslash came from
underneath, inflicting heavy damage on
Houndoom.
Not waiting for it to make any kind of
counter attack, the trainer decided to
finish the
battle.
"Sandslash, swift!"
Seemingly flying, the almost
air-borne Sandslash unleashed the
speed
star attack. Whimpering in pain, the
Houndoom fell to the ground in defeat.
"Impossible!" cried the
man.
"Ready for more?"
The man recalled his Houndoom.
"This isn't over, girl," he
yelled as he
ran away.
The boy recalled his Sandslash
with a word of praise. Now, he turned
to face Kris, who had fallen to her
knees. She stiffened. If he wanted her
mew as well, he'd
have to fight her for it. Despite the
fact he probably had a full line-up of
experienced
fighters, she wasn't going to just
give her pokémon to a thief.
"Now," he said rather
sternly, "are you okay?"
A little shocked because it wasn't
what she expected to hear, she
stammers what sounds like a 'yes'.
His voice relaxes. "Thats
good." He kneels down so he can
see her
face-to-face. "You aren't a
trainer yet, are you?"
"No," she pauses.
"How did you know?"
"It was pretty obvious. I
mean, if you were a trainer, or one
that was
any good, you would have fought even
if you knew couldn't win, just for the
chance to
save your pokémon."
Kris nodded.
"So, where are you
registering?"
"Cerulean is the only place I
can reach by the end of today."
"Is today the last day of the
season?" He thinks. "You
should really
start in Pallet. It's the best place
to start."
"Like I said, I can't -
"
"Leave that to me." He
stands. "By the way," he
says as he helps her
up, "my name is . Pleasure to
meet you."
