Spoof groups take aim at boy-band land

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys really have something to sing about. The Meaty Cheesy Boys harmonized about hamburgers (for fast food chain Jack in the Box's commercials), and even appeared on UPN's Grownups. Then ABC's Making the Band documented the creation of teen dream O-Town. And finally, there's the cast of MTV's mockumentary 2gether, which sang, danced, and yes, acted its way into the hearts of millions. (Backstreet Boy A. J. McLean, for one, is unimpressed by the trend: "Isn't there enough of that right now?" he sniffs.) The fabricated fivesome's video "U + Me = Us (Calculus)" scored a slot on MTV's Total Request Live alongside some of the very pop groups they were satirizing. According to Evan Farmer, who plays 2gether heartthrob Jerry O'Keefe, his band may be fictional, but it's no Milli Vanilli. "We did it all," Evan says. "We recorded all the music and hit the choreography beats." Evan got previuos boy-group experience as a member of the now-defunct Russian chart toppers Na-Na. But with a brand-new weekly TV show and a huge fan base, 2gether has become a bona fide hit in its own right. Can a world tour be far behind?
